Why Do People Commit Suicide? A Qualitative Analysis of Suicide Notes and Texts

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se týká analýzy originálních dopisů a textů na rozloučenou sebevrahů. Díky kvalitativní analýze dat předkládaná práce zjišťuje subjektivní důvody sebevraždy a odpovídá na otázku „Proč lidé páchají sebevraždy?“ Autorka využívá paradigma interpretativní sociologie, aby skrz porozumění samotným aktérům pronikla do zkoumaných textů. Teoretická kapitola představuje základní pojmy, konkrétně teorii sebevražd Emila Durkheima a diskutuje psychologické a psychoanalytické faktory vztahující se k sebevraždám a rovněž podává výklad o problematice dopisů na rozloučenou. Analytická část práce se opírá o 34 původních dopisů na rozloučenou zveřejněných v publikaci Clues to Suicide autorů Edwina S. Shneidmana a Normana L. Farberowa a dopisů z publikace …OR NOT TO BE A Collection of Suicide Notes autora Marca Etkinda. Rovněž pracuje s dalším zdrojem dat, z České republiky, a to s dvojicí blogů na rozloučenou zanechanými pisatelem Berkou. Problematika získávání primárních dat na našem území i v jiných státech je diskutována v kapitole zaměřující se na zdroje dat, ve které jsou zdroje dat pro předkládanou práci autorkou charakterizovány. Pomocí výzkumných metod narativní analýzy a tematické analýzy se kapitola věnující analýze dat zabývá odpověďmi na výzkumné otázky. Při analýze je využito teoretických konceptů sociální integrace, institucionalizace, sebepojetí, sociální kontroly, sociální koheze, stigmatizace, anomie, altruismu aj. Na téma lásky je nahlíženo skrze koncepty mateřské a erotické lásky Ericha Fromma. Následně jsou kvalitativní data z výzkumného souboru konfrontována s Durkheimovou klasifikací sebevražd.

Abstract:

The master’s thesis deals with the analysis of genuine suicide notes and texts. The author uses qualitative research methods to discover and identify the subjective reasons given by suiciders in their suicide notes. Interpretative approach of sociology is used to understand the text samples. The theoretical part of this master’s thesis introduces basic concepts, especially the Emile Durkheim’s theory of suicide. The psychoanalytic factors are discussed related to suicides and the problematic of suicide notes is explained. In the analytical part, 34 genuine suicide notes are used by Edwin S. Shneidman and Norman L. Farberow published in the publication “Clues to Suicide”, the genuine suicide note from the publication “…OR NOT TO BE A Collection of Suicide Notes” by Marc Etkind, and the Internet blogs by Berka from the Czech Republic. The issue of obtaining primary data in the Czech Republic and in other countries is discussed in the chapter focusing on the data sources. The methodology part introduces the research methods of narrative analysis and thematic analysis and describes in more details research questions. The research is based on the sociological concepts of social integration, institutionalization, self-concept, social control, social cohesion, stigmatization, anomie, altruism, etc. Subsequently, the qualitative data from the research sample are confronted with Durkheim's classification of suicides.
