Determinants of Post-ICOs (Initial Coin Offerings) Performance

Abstract:

Crowdfunding je díky blockchain technologii stále dostupnější. Je tedy snazší získat peníze na projekty od investorů bez potřebné byrokracie, která je nutná například u akcií. Kvůli nedostatku regulace v této oblasti však dochází k mnoha podvodům. Tato práce se snaží najít, zdali je možné předem rozlišit projekty, které budou úspěšné. Toho je docíleno pomocí získání dat z různý data agregátorů ohledně ICO projektů. Následně byla všechna data spojena do jednoho datasetu. Tento dataset byl poté použit k analýze. Pomocí metody Náhodný les, což je kombinovaná učící metoda pro klasifikaci a regresi, byly nalezeny proměnné, které mají na návratnost investice největší vliv. Dále byly nalezeny optimální hodnoty těchto proměnných, aby se investor mohl rozhodnout, zdali je do nějakého projektu vhodné investovat nebo ne. Například bylo zjištěno, že pro lepší návratnost investice z ICO je optimálnější kratší doba trvání samotné ICO fáze projektu. Jako optimální hodnota byl zjištěn 1 den. Dále je důležitý počet firem, které daný projekt finančně podporují. Projekty, které mají větší počet takovýchto firem mají často větší návratnost dle ceny mince v čase. Také bylo zjištěno, že je důležitá kategorie projektu. Ty nejúspěšnější projekty jsou často z oblasti, která se věnuje rozvoji samotné blockchain technologie. Další důležitý atribut, který má vliv na návratnost investice je dle tohoto výzkumu unikátnost projektu, neboli jak úzkou specializaci daný projekt má. Projekty, které se věnují specifičtějším věcem jsou úspěšnější, než projekty, jejichž cíl není úzce specializovaný. Z hlediska návratnosti investice práce zohledňuje návratnost po 3, 6 a 12 měsících u jednotlivých proměnných.

Abstract:

Crowdfunding is becoming more accessible thanks to blockchain technology. It is, therefore, easier to get money for projects from investors without the necessary bureaucracy, which is required, for example, when investing in shares. However, due to the lack of regulation in this area, many frauds occur. This work tries to find whether it is possible to distinguish in advance the projects that will be successful. This is achieved by obtaining data from various data aggregators regarding Initial Coin Offering (ICO) projects. Subsequently, all data were combined into one dataset. This dataset was then used for analysis. Using the Random forest method, which is a combined learning method for classification and regression, the variables that have the greatest influence on the return on investment were discovered. Furthermore, the optimal values of these variables were found so that the investor can decide whether it is appropriate to invest in projects with specific features or not. For example, it was observed that a shorter duration of the project’s ICO phase is highly associated with a better return on investment of the ICO. One day was found to be the optimal value. The number of companies that financially support the given project is also important. Projects that have a larger number of such companies often have a greater return on investment according to the price of the coin over time. The project category was also found to be important. The most successful projects are often from the area dedicated to the development of blockchain technology itself. According to this research, another important attribute that affects the return on investment is the uniqueness of the project and how narrowly specialized the project is. Projects focusing on a narrowly specific area are more successful than projects with no specific goals. In terms of return on investment, the work takes into account the return on investment after 3, 6 and 12 months.
