Narrative foreclosure in life stories of institutionalized elderly people

Abstract:

Práce, využívající kvalitativní design, se zaměřuje na porozumění tomu, jakým způsobem se manifestuje narativní předuzavřenost ve vyprávění životních příběhů seniorů žijících v institucionální péči. Cílem práce bylo zjistit, skrze jaká témata a formy se tento koncept v narativech projevuje. Výzkumu se zúčastnilo celkem šest seniorů ve věku 82-98 let. S každým participantem byl veden narativní rozhovor, který byl následně doplněn o vlastní terénní poznámky. Narativní analýza pak probíhala prostřednictvím vybraných analytických kategorií, mezi něž patřily tematické linie, aktérství, pozice a žánry. Výsledky práce ukázaly, že narativní předuzavřenost může ve vyprávěních nabírat různé formy i obsah, jež se jeví pro participanty z mého výzkumného souboru jako typické. V práci se podařilo identifikovat významná témata, skrze která se narativní předuzavřenost může manifestovat. Práce představuje také dva žánry, prostřednictvím kterých se předuzavřenost může demonstrovat, a které svou charakteristikou odpovídají pojetí žánrů tragédie a ironie. Z výsledků analýzy také vyplývá, že životní příběhy nemusí mít výhradně předuzavřený či otevřený charakter, ale že se jedná spíše o různý podíl zastoupení prvků obou těchto konceptů. Výsledky spolu s jejich možnými implikacemi do praxe jsou diskutovány v kontextu dosavadních poznatků.

Abstract:

This qualitative study is building up the understanding of how narrative foreclosure is demonstrated in life stories of institutionalised elderly people. The aim of the study was to point out in what themes and forms narrative foreclosure is represented. Six elderly people aged between 82 and 98 participated in this research. A narrative interview was held with each participant. The outcomes of the interviews were then compared with the author's field notes. Narrative analysis was conducted using chosen analytical categories including thematic lines, agency, positioning and genres. The results showed that narrative foreclosure could take different forms and contents within narratives that seem to be typical for the participants in this study. Relevant topics through which this concept can manifest itself were revealed. Furthermore, two genres are presented in which narrative foreclosure can illustrate the classic characterization of tragedy and irony. The results of analysis also imply the fact, that life stories do not need to be exclusively narratively foreclosed or opened. They rather contain various proportions of signs of both concepts. The results of this study along with their possible practical implications are discussed in the context of existing knowledge.
