Towards the Ideal: The Idealism–Realism Dispute about Social Justice

Abstract:

Cílem práce je systematizovat a kriticky rekonstruovat stále se vyvíjející debatu mezi idealisty a realisty v otázce sociální spravedlnosti. Téma patří k esenciálním sporům politické filosofie a jeho závěry mohou ovlivňovat standardy spravedlnosti, společenské uspořádání i nastavení institucí. Tato diskuse má také rozměr metodologický, neboť problematizuje úlohu normativních politických teorií i politické filosofie jako takové. Autoři David Estlund a Gerald Gaus vymezují linii debaty; skrze shodná východiska a jejich rozpory je vystavěna. Z práce vyplývá, že při formulování jakékoli normativní teorie je nutné idealizovat. Autoři také sdílí přesvědčení, že v otázce sociální spravedlnosti stojíme před volbou mezi následováním vzdáleného ideálu a dostupnějším, ale jen částečným zlepšením. Zásadní spor nastává v otázce vztahu pravdivosti a praktičnosti, neboli zdali jde o kategorie provázané či oddělené. Ve výsledku Estlund zastává možnost konsensu a následování jednoho ideálu, zatím co Gaus prosazuje dynamické utkávání různých perspektiv, které přinese snižování nespravedlnosti. Zaujetí konkrétní pozice v debatě předpokládá vyjasnění úlohy politické filosofie.

Abstract:

The goal of this master thesis is to systematize and critically reconstruct the ongoing debate between idealists and realists on the matter of social justice. This topic is one of the essential controversies of political philosophy, and its conclusions may influence the standards of justice, social arrangements, and institutional design. The discussion includes a methodological dimension, since it also concerns the role of normative political theories and of political philosophy itself. Authors David Estlund and Gerald Gaus delimit the main course of the debate; it is developed on the basis of shared grounds and disagreements. The thesis concludes that, in the case of the formulation of any normative theory, it is unavoidable to idealize. Both authors also agree that the question of social justice brings the dilemma between following a distant ideal or choosing accessible, but only partial improvement in Justice. The crucial controversy arises from the relation between truth and practicality, i.e. whether these categories are interconnected or separate. Consequently, Estlund argues for the possibility of a consensus and the following of a single ideal; Gaus advocates a dynamical interaction of diverse perspectives that should bring improvements in injustice. Finally, taking a particular stand in the debate presupposes the clarification of the role of political philosophy.
