Authorial Style in Translation: White Teeth by Zadie Smith

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se věnuje analýze stylistických prvků v knize White Teeth od Zadie Smith a jejímu českému překladu od Yvetty Novákové. Úvodní kapitoly seznamují s pojetím stylu v obecné rovině a nastiňují doporučený překladatelský přístup k němu. V další části diplomové práce je představena autorka knihy a jsou popsána její oblíbená témata a typy postav. Kvůli kontextu je i stručně shrnut obsah a hlavní témata analyzované knihy. Následující kapitoly se zabývají konkrétními prvky autorského stylu Zadie Smith, např. žánrovým stylem, vypravěčským stylem nebo expresívností. K jednotlivým podkapitolám jsou přiřazeny okomentované příklady z knih White Teeth a The Autograph Man od Zadie Smith. Druhá část diplomové práce obsahuje analýzu českého překladu knihy White Teeth, která byla částečně provedena na syntaktické rovině. Větší důraz byl ale kladen na rovinu lexikální, a to především na rozbor idiomů, kolokací a metafor. Další analýza zahrnuje posuny v registru a dialekty, lexikální bohatost, průměrnou délku vět, verba dicendi, kulturně specifické pojmy, překlad jmen a překladové univerzálie. Poslední kapitola poukazuje na viditelné rysy překladatelského stylu Yvetty Novákové, zejména na časté užívání sedmého pádu, zdrobnělin a specifických výrazů. V závěru jsou zrekapitulovány poznatky jednotlivých analýz, které prokázaly nedosažitelnost přesného přenesení stylu originálu do překladu, a zároveň je zde zdůrazněna nutnost brát při překládání autorský styl v potaz a vědomě s ním nakládat, aby bylo možno se mu alespoň co nejvíce přiblížit. Příloha diplomové práce obsahuje příklady překladových univerzálií v překladech Yvetty Novákové a také čtyři ilustrační úryvky z analyzované knihy, společně s jejich českým překladem.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis is devoted to the stylistic features of the novel by Zadie Smith White Teeth and its Czech translation by Yvetta Nováková. The first part of the paper deals, in a general sense, with the concept of style and comments on the translator’s approach towards it. In the next part an introduction to Zadie Smith is revealed along with her favourite themes, types of characters and a short summary of the examined novel. Further, Zadie Smith’s style of writing is examined covering features such as stylistic repetition, genre style, narrative voice or authorial expressivity. This section includes examples taken from the two books by Smith—White Teeth and the Autograph Man. In the second part of the thesis the analysis of the translation of White Teeth was conducted. It was carried out partially at the syntactic level but predominantly at the lexical level at which translation of idioms, metaphors and collocations are examined. Further analysis covers the shift in register and dialect, the type/token ratio, the average sentence length, reporting verbs, culture-specifics, names translation and translation universals. The last chapter is devoted to distinguishable markers of Yvetta Nováková’s style, specifically her employment of the instrumental case, diminutives, specific lexis and repetition. The conclusion recapitulates outcomes of the individual chapters concentrating on the analysis, proving that it is impossible for the translator to copy the style of the original text entirely and at the same time stresses the necessity of the translator to take the authorial style into account and process it consciously in order to approximate it as much as possible. There are several appendixes attached to this paper containing occurrences of translation universals in Yvetta Nováková’s translations and also samples of the novel examined in this thesis together with its Czech translation.
