Abstract:

Abstract Summary This essay analyses the impact of e-commerce to the traditional retail economy in the United Kingdom under the economic and legal perspectives. The paper looks at how digital transformation has changed retail structures and consumer behaviour both through a mixed-method approach by combining secondary data presented by the Office of National Statistics and a qualitative approach to the regulatory frameworks mediated by the countries of the UK and European Union. The findings reveal that online retail is rapidly replacing offline retail that has been shortened by both technological innovation and COVID-19 pandemic. It also addresses the influence of the competition law, consumer protection and data regulation on digital markets. Recommendations present the need to sponsor sustainable and fair retail transformation by imposing balanced regulatory means. Research Background & Motivation The rapidly changing retail market has undergone transformation by the expedited maturation of e-commerce, new digital platforms, information-driven focus and accessibility globally. Increased internet penetration, mobile commerce, and innovation of technology have changed the consumer behaviour and business model in the UK. However, there are also regulatory concerns with this change in terms of competition, consumer protection and data privacy. The need to have the answer to such questions as how the e-commerce influences the traditional retail structure, and the influence of the legal frameworks on this transition drive the research. Objectives •Evaluate the impact of e-commerce on traditional retail performance in the UK. •Analyse changes in consumer behaviour within digital retail environments. •Examine the role of UK legal frameworks (competition, consumer protection, data laws). •Assess the economic and technological drivers of e-commerce growth. •Provide recommendations for improving regulatory frameworks in digital retail markets. Whereas digitalisation brings opportunities on growth and innovation, it has regulatory and competitive threats.
