The Fairy Tales by Brothers Grimm from the Point of View of Gender

Abstract:

Teoretickou část práce tvoří dvě kapitoly. První z nich se zabývá genderem, maskulinitou a feminitou. Pojednává o teoriích genderu, z nichž nejpodrobněji jsou zpracovány teorie kulturní. Obsahuje rovněž genderové stereotypy a vývoj genderové identity v rámci socializace. Na příkladech jsou uvedeny rozdíly mezi chlapci a dívkami a mezi muži a ženami. Genderové stereotypy tvoří společnost, která k mužům a ženám přistupuje odlišně a klade na ně jiná očekávání. Práce se věnuje rovněž tématu feminismu a tomu, jak jsou ženy v jazyce znevýhodňovány. Druhou kapitolu tvoří pohádky se zaměřením na vznik a šíření pohádek ve světě. Pojednává o různých typech pohádek, z nichž nejvíce jsou popsány pohádky lidové, které sbírali bratři Grimmové. Pohádky obsahují zbytky starých mýtů, které jsou důležité pro psychoanalytický výklad pohádek. Pohádky ovlivňují psychický vývoj dítěte a mají vliv rovněž na genderovou socializaci. Ve výzkumné části bylo cílem najít a popsat genderové stereotypy ve vybraných pohádkách bratří Grimmů. K tomu byla použita metoda kvalitativní obsahové analýzy. Výzkumný soubor tvořily tři pohádky dlouhé a tři krátké. Bylo zjištěno, že délka pohádky neovlivňuje, zda pohádka obsahuje, nebo neobsahuje genderové stereotypy. Některé pohádky obsahují větší množství vět, v nichž se femininum vyskytuje za maskulinem, což je z feministického pohledu znevýhodňování žen v jazyce.

Abstract:

The theoretical part of this bachelor thesis contains two chapters. The first chapter deals with gender, masculinity and famininity. It discusses the gender theories, the most detailed of which are the culture theories. It also contains the gender stereotypes and the evolution of the gender identity during the socialization. The differences among boys and girls and among men and women are shown on some examples. The gender stereotypes create a society which take a different approach to men and women and rises different expectations on them. The thesis also introduces the topic of feminism and how women are disadvantaged in the language. The second part looks into the fairy tales with the concentration on their origin and propagation in the world. It presents various types of fairy tales and folk tales collected by the Brothers Grimm are described in detail. Fairy tales contain some remains of old myths, which are important for their psychoanalytical interpretation. Fairy tales influence the mental development of children and affect also the gender socialization. The aim of the experimental part was to find and describe the gender stereotypes in some selected tales by the Brothers Grimm. The qualitative analysis of the content was used as the method. The research collection was comprised of three long and three short tales. It has been discovered that the length of the tale has no influence on the fact whether the tale contains the gender stereotypes or not. Some tales contain a large number of sentences where femininity appears behind masculinity, which from the feminist point of view disadvantages women in language.
