The impact of the birth of a child with mental disabilities on family functioning

Abstract:

ABSTRAKT Cílem diplomové práce je zjistit, jak narození dítěte s mentálním postižením změní fungování rodiny pohledem členů rodiny. Teoretická část seznamuje s historickým a současným pohledem na problematiku péče o osoby s mentálním postižením se zaměřením na péči v rodinách. Popisuje vývoj vztahu k osobám s mentálním postižením, aktuální stav a problémy spojené s péčí o děti s mentálním postižením. Součástí diplomové práce je kvalitativní výzkum, metoda případové studie. Sběr dat byl prováděn metodou polostrukturovaného rozhovoru s 6 respondenty, rodiči (matkami), pečujícími o svoje děti s mentálním postižením. Následnou analýzou kódovaných dat byly získány závěry. Hlavním zjištěním je, že péče o dítě s mentálním postižením je pro rodiny velmi náročná a ovlivňuje život celé rodiny, nejenom rodičů a dětí s mentálním postižením, ale i sourozenců a širší rodiny v celé šíři života i ve společenském a pracovním uplatnění. I přes zlepšování situace těchto rodin zůstává řada nevyřešených problémů, mezi které patří nedostatečná finanční podpora těchto rodin, nedostatečná síť sociálních služeb pro děti s mentálním postižením a jejich rodiny. Současně se ukazuje, že uznání a podpora této záslužné činnosti ze strany společnosti a státu je stále nedostatečná

Abstract:

ABSTRACT The aim of the thesis is to find out how the birth of a child with mental disabilities changes the functioning of the family from the perspective of the family members. The theoretical part introduces the historical and contemporary perspective on the care of people with mental disabilities with a focus on care in families. It describes the development of the relationship with persons with mental disabilities, the current status and problems associated with the care of children with mental disabilities. The thesis includes qualitative research, case study method. Data collection was carried out by semi-structured interview method with 6 respondents, parents (mothers) caring for their children with mental disabilities. Subsequent analysis of the coded data yielded the following conclusions. The main finding is that caring for a child with an mental disability is very challenging for families and affects the life of the whole family, not only parents and children with mental disabilities, but also siblings and the wider family in the whole breadth of life as well as in social and occupational participation. Despite improvements in the situation of these families, a number of unresolved problems remain, including insufficient financial support for these families, and an inadequate network of social services for children with mental disabilities and their families. At the same time, it appears that recognition and support for this meritorious activity by society and the state is still insufficient.
