The language of youtubers: linguistic analysis of popular English speaking youtubers

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on the language of YouTubers who have become popular thanks to their videos uploaded on YouTube. The aim of this work is to analyze a spoken monologue which is the main format of the YouTube videos, and to determine how YouTubers communicate with their audience and include them in their monologues. For the purposes of this analysis, several videos by Pewdiepie and Jacksfilms were chosen. The main focus is on the use of pronouns and accompanying vocabulary and grammatical features which include the audience in the speech. The use of these linguistic features indicated that YouTubers strive to create a friendly communal atmosphere and revealed the uncertainty which comes with addressing a large group of unknown people.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá jazykem YouTuberů, kteří se díky svým videím na YouTube stali populárními. Cílem této práce je analyzovat mluvený monolog, který je hlavním komunikačním prostředkem YouTube videí, a jak YouTubeři komunikují se svými diváky a zahrnují je v monologu. Pro tuto analýzu byly vybrány videa od YouTuberů Pewdiepie a Jacksfilms, přičemž se tato práce soustředí na použití zájmen, doprovodnou slovní zásobu a gramatické jevy. Užití těchto jazykových prostředků poukazálo na přátelský vztah a pocit jednotnosti, který se YouTubeři snaží navázat, a také na nejistotu spojenou s oslovováním velké skupiny tvořenou z většiny neznámými lidmi.
