Coping strategies among psychotherapists/counselors in relationship to their professional and life satisfaction

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je studium zvládacích strategií českých psychoterapeutů a poradců. Pomocí analýzy kvantitativních dat získaných formou dotazníkového šetření, zkoumáme na vzorku 208 respondentů potenciál takového sebepečujícího chování, v kontextu jejich pracovní a životní spokojenosti. V analýze zohledňujeme také vliv proměnných jako je míra vyhoření, délka a typ praxe, věk, pohlaví, či pracovní vytíženost respondentů. Zjišťujeme, že nízká míra diskrepance mezi hodnocením důležitosti zvládacích strategií a jejich užíváním v praxi je stabilním ukazatelem vysoké pracovní i životní spokojenosti a nízké míry vyhoření respondentů. Užívání konkrétních zvládacích strategií v praxi pak statisticky významně koreluje s větší pracovní i životní spokojeností a menší mírou vyhoření respondentů. Naopak, hodnocení důležitosti zvládacích strategií terapeuty koreluje s těmito proměnnými v menší míře, v některých případech se objevuje dokonce pozitivní korelace s mírou vyhoření. Dále bylo zjištěno, že ženy hodnotí důležitost řady strategií statisticky významně výše než muži. Podobně, terapeuti působící v rámci veřejného sektoru kladou větší důraz na hodnocení důležitosti i užívání zvládacích strategií, než jejich kolegové ze soukromých praxí.

Abstract:

The aim of the current thesis was to study the coping strategies among Czech psychotherapists and counselors. Using a quantitative data analyze, obtained by questionnaire research, we are investigating the real potential of such a self-care behavior on a sample of 208 respondents, in the context of their job and life satisfaction. We also take an account of influence of the other variables, such as a degree of burnout, length and type of practice, age, sex, or workload of therapists. We found, that the low difference between a strategies importance rate and a rate of using strategies in practice is a stable marker of high job and life satisfaction and low burnout degree. Using the specific strategies in practice is significantly connected with a higher job and life satisfaction and a lower burnout degree of therapists. On the other hand, rating of strategies importance by respondents does correlate lower with these variables, furthermore, in the specific cases a positive correlation between this rating and a higher burnout degree of the therapists was found. Women rate the importance of some specific strategies higher than men. Likewise, therapists from a public sector put more emphasis on rating of importance and also on using strategies in practice, than their colleagues from private practice.
