Perception and reflection of private and public spaces by users of social networking sites

Abstract:

S nástupem nových médií a zejména online sociálních sítí bývá často spojováno rozmlžování hranic, například mezi virtuálním a fyzickým světem či mezi producenty a konzumenty. V této diplomové práci se zaměřím na hranici mezi privátním a veřejným prostorem, která je v oblasti online sociálních sítí často neostrá a nesnadno uchopitelná. Skutečně je privátní prostor kolonizován a lidé ztrácejí zájem chránit si své soukromí? Je možné stanovit nové hranice, jsou-li vůbec nějaké? Odpovědi na tyto otázky se snažím nalézt v této práci. Hlavním cílem tohoto výzkumu bylo zjistit, jak privátní a veřejná prostor v rámci online sociální sitě reflektují samotní uživatelé a zdali ho vůbec reflektují. V teoretické části této práce nastiňuji problematiku privátního a veřejného prostoru v kontextu nových médií a zejména online sociálních sítí. Zabývám se zde také dalšími tématy, která podle získaných dat ovlivňují reflexi uživatelů těchto dvou zmíněných prostorů. V metodologické části představuji metody a způsoby, jimiž jsem se řídila při sběru, analýze a interpretaci dat. V empirické části pak představuji vytvořenou typologii a další výsledky výzkumu. Výsledná teoretická i empirická zjištění a odpovědi na výzkumné otázky shrnuji v diskusi v závěrečné části práce.

Abstract:

After the entrance of new media and mainly social networking sites, the phenomenon of blurring borders is often mentioned, for example, between the virtual and physical world, or between producers and consumers. In this paper I focus on the border between private and public spaces, which is, if we speak about the area of social networking sites, often blurred and difficult to grasp. My paper is looking for answers to following questions: Is private space really colonized? Do the people lose their interest in protecting their privacy? Is it possible to establish new boundaries between the two spaces – if there are some? Therefore the aim of this work is to find out how the users reflect private and public spaces within social networking sites. In the theoretical part of this work I describe the issue of private and public spaces in the context of new media and, particularly, social networking sites. I also deal with other topics that, according to obtained data, influence the users perception of these two spaces. In the methodological part I present the methods and ways that I have used to collect, analyze and interpret data. In the empirical part I present typology that I have created and other research results. The work is concluded with a discussion of theoretical and empirical part and of the answers to research questions of the work.
