The transforming ideas of home and formation of new identity types: reflection on consequences of the age of mobility

Abstract:

Práce reflektuje fenomén dnešní doby, jímž je velká míra mobility a její nový charakter. Ambicí této teoretické práce je především poukázat na změny s tímto fenoménem spjaté. Změny, o nichž tato práce pojednává, tkví v představách o domově a ve vzniku nových typů identit. První část práce představuje hlavní koncepty: identitu a domov. Představa o domově je z hlediska identit formativní. Zkušenost přesunu, vykročení mimo místo, které nazýváme domovem, má sílu měnit představu o domově, protože na něj nahlížíme odjinud, z vnějšku. A tato změněná představa o domově má potenciál formovat nové typy identit. Další část práce je věnovaná historickému vývoji dnešní doby mobility, v níž je pozornost upírána na měnící se vztah času a prostoru. Separace času a prostoru sehrála významnou roli v tvorbě charakteru dnešní mobility. Závěrečná část práce je zaměřena na analýzu charakteru doby mobility, která je srovnávána s dobou předchozí. Mezníkem mezi těmito dvěma obdobími je míra a charakter mobility. V prvním období byly formovány usazené identity, v době dnešní mobility to jsou identity v pohybu. Změněný charakter identit je spjatý s novými pluralizovanými představami o domově. Rozpouští se představa o domově jako jednom fyzickém místě, dřívější relativně stabilní identity jsou pluralizovány a fyzické hranice se na úrovní sociálních vazeb rozplývají.

Abstract:

This thesis reflects upon the current phenomenon of the increasing extent and the changing character of mobility. The aim of this theoretical thesis is to point out changes that are related to this phenomenon. The changes examined in this thesis center around the ideas of home and the formation of new types of identity. The initial part introduces the main concepts of identity and home. The idea of home is formative in terms of identities. Experience with displacement outside the place we call home has the potential to alter the idea of home as it allows us to regard it from an external perspective. This transformed idea of home has the potential to form new types of identity. The following part of the thesis is concerned with the historical development leading up to the age of mobility. It is focused on the transforming character of the spatial-temporal relationship. The separation of time and space played an important role in the formation of the current character of mobility. The final part focuses on analyzing the character of the age of mobility in comparison to the character of the preceding age. The distinguishing feature between these two ages is the extent and character of mobility. In the first age settled identities were formed, while in the current age the identities formed are mobile. The altered character of identities is connected to pluralized ideas of home. The idea of home as a singular physical place is being dissolved, identities that were previously stable become pluralized, and physical boundaries on the level of social connections dissipate.
