Albanians in Southern Serbia and Irredentism of Preševo Valley

Abstract:

Předkládaná práce se zabývá albánskou menšinou v Preševském údolí na jihu Srbska, především projevy preševského iredentismu zhruba v posledních dvaceti letech. Úvodní kapitola se zaměřuje na geografické, demografické a sociokulturní poměry v oblasti. V minulosti žili Albánci i v Nišském sandžaku (Toplica, Pusta Reka, Vranje, Leskovac, Niš, Pirot, Bela Palanka), ale během srbsko-turecké války (1876–1878) a několika následujících let odsud odešli. Zachováno zůstalo jen několik albánských vesnic v pohoří Gornja Jablanica. Poté se Preševské údolí stalo dějištěm neúspěšných protitureckých povstání a v roce 1913 definitivně připadlo Srbsku. Nositeli preševského iredentismu v rámci Jugoslávie bylo několik slabých ilegálních organizací. V roce 1992 vypsali preševští Albánci referendum o politické územní autonomii s právem připojit se ke Kosovu. V roce 2000 vypukl ozbrojený konflikt mezi Osvobozeneckou armádou pro Preševo, Medveđu a Bujanovac a jugoslávskými bezpečnostními silami.

Abstract:

The present work deals with the Albanian minority in the Preševo Valley in southern Serbia, especially with manifestations of irredentism in the past twenty years. The introductory chapter is focused on geographic, demographic and socio-cultural conditions of the area. In the past, Albanians lived well in the Sanjak of Niš (Toplica, Pusta Reka, Vranje, Leskovac, Niš, Pirot, Bela Palanka), but during the Serbian-Turkish wars (1876–1878) and the next few years, they left these areas. Only a few Albanian villages remained in the Gornja Jablanica Mountains. After, the Preševo Valley became the scene of anti-Turkish uprisings and finally in 1913, Serbia gained this area. In Yougoslavia, the bearers of irredentism of the Preševo Valley were only a few non-influential illegal groups. In 1992, Albanians organized a referendum on territorial and political autonomy including right to join Kosovo. In 2000, an armed conflict errupted between the Liberation Army for Preševo, Medvedja and Bujanovac and the Yougoslav security forces.
