History of Polemics on Literary Czech

Abstract:

Ve své práci jsem se zaměřila na popis polemik o spisovné češtině, které v českém lingvistickém prostředí probíhaly od počátku 19. století. Cílem této práce je vytvořit historický přehled nejdůležitějších názorů na vývoj spisovného jazyka, jeho normu a kodifikaci. Pro zaznamenání průběhu a vývoje jednotlivých polemik jsem využila několik typů pramenů. Nejdůležitějšími prameny pro období 19. století byly starší kodifikační příručky a příslušné monografie; pro polemiky 20. století jsem využila hlavně články publikované ve dvou předních českých jazykovědných časopisech ? Naše řeč a Slovo a slovesnost. Popsala jsem hlavní teze a přístupy protagonistů jednotlivých názorových proudů a analyzovala jejich argumenty. Sledované období jsem rozdělila na etapy. Ty jsem popsala v odpovídajících kapitolách mé diplomové práce: 1. pro první polovinu 19. století byly charakteristické snahy prosadit či naopak zamítnout analogickou úpravu pravopisu a obrodit jazyk po veleslavínském vzoru, 2. ve druhé polovině 19. století, hlavně v období od sedmdesátých let do přelomu století, vrcholí puristické tendence, 3. v období prvních desetiletí 20. století je stále patrná puristická praxe, avšak objevují se hlasy volající po zmírnění brusičského diktátu, 4. vystoupení hlavních protagonistů Pražského lingvistického kroužku a odklon od puristických zásahů je spjat s obdobím třicátých a čtyřicátých let 5. poválečný vývoj byl ovlivněn pražským strukturalismem, marrismem a marxismem, 6. období šedesátých let bylo charakteristické diskusí o obecné češtině, 7. v období normalizace nebyly otevřené diskuse umožněny, 8. období devadesátých let je typické názorovým rozrůzněním české lingvistické scény, 9. současnost se nese v duchu nových polemik o spisovném jazyce, standardní češtině a nově i o konceptu minimální intervence.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the description of the polemics on literary Czech, which have taken place on the Czech linguistic scene since the beginning of the 19th century. The aim of this thesis is to provide a review of the history of the most important thoughts on the evolution of the literary language, its norm and codification. I used many type sof sources to describe the course and development of single polemics. For characterization of the polemics, which took place in the 19th century, I used older codification textware as the main source, for the period of the 20th century I mostly used the arcticles which were publicated in two notable Czech linguistic periodicals ? Naše řeč and Slovo a slovesnost. I described the outlines and approaches of the representatives of opinion currents and analyzed their arguments. I also devided the observed epocha into special periods ? these are described in particular chapters of my thesis: 1. For the first half of the 19th century the efforts to enforce or to refuse the analogical revision of orthography and regenerate the language after the Veleslavín´s standard of language were the chief interests of our linguists. 2. In the second half of the 19th century, especially from 1870´s to the turn of the century, the purism efforts culminated. 3. In the 1910´s and 1920´s the purism practise was still perceptible, but we could note some pursuits to reduce the purism interference. 4. The display of Prague linguistic circle and its refusing of purism encroachment on the language is bound up with the period of the 1930´s. 5. The postwar decade is affected by structuralism, Marrism and Marxism. 6. The 1960´s is typicall for the dicussion on common Czech. 7. In the period of the normalization the freespoken polemics were not allowed. 8. The period of the 1990´s was typical for its opinion differentness on the Czech linguistic scene. 9. At present there are new polemics on literary Czech, standard Czech and on incoming form of Czech codification system.
