The Frequency of Borrowings in Written Discourse

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis consists of theoretical and practical part. In the theoretical part, the main focus is on presenting various periods in British history which had a major impact on the English language in terms of borrowed words. These periods are chronologically outlined and their impact on the English language is described. The practical part aims to determine the frequency of borrowed words in the written discourses and also to find out which origin of words is the most frequent and on the contrary which origin is the least frequent. Moreover, another aim of the thesis is to decide from which languages English borrows the majority of words. These words are studied in three written discourses. Furthermore, one of the aims of the research is to find which word class is borrowed the most. The results demonstrates that the majority of words were taken over to English from Old French (75 %) and Latin (16 %). Regarding the origin of only borrowed words, the majority is from Latin (88 %). However, once the origin of all words is analysed then the proportion is different because Latin accounts for 44 % and Proto-Germanic for 43 %. The most frequent borrowed word class is nouns which represent 51 %. In the conclusion, the overall comparison of gained data is demonstrated in words as well as in tables and graphs. The thesis may serve as a source for further research in this field.

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se skládá z teoretické a praktické části. V teoretické části se klade důraz na vyobrazení různých období v britské historii, která měla podstatný dopad na angličtinu a přebíraní cizích slov. Tato období jsou chronologicky nastíněna a současně je popsán vliv těchto období na anglický jazyk. Praktická část se zaměřuje na stanovení frekvence převzatých slov v písemných diskurzech a zároveň je tato část zaměřena na zjištění nejčastějšího a nejméně častého původu převzatých slov. Dalším cílem práce je rozhodnout, z kterých jazyků angličtina přebírá slova nejčastěji. Tato slova jsou zkoumána ve třech vybraných písemných diskurzech. Posledním cílem výzkumu práce je zjistit, který slovní druh je nejčastěji přebírán. Ze zjištěných výsledků je patrné, že anglický jazyk převzal největší počet slov ze starofrancouzštiny (75 %) a z latiny (16 %). V případě, že by byl sledován původ pouze převzatých slov, tak většina pochází z latiny (88 %). Nicméně pokud je analyzován původ všech slov ve vybraných písemných diskurzech, tak se proporce liší, latina tvoří 44 % a proto-germánské jazyky tvoří 43 %. Nejčastěji půjčovaný slovní druh z převzatých slov jsou podstatná jména, protože tato slova představují 51 %. Na závěr je prezentováno celkové porovnání získaných dat jak textové formě, tak tabulkách a grafech. Tato práce může sloužit jako zdroj pro další výzkumy v tomto odvětví.
