Abstract:

Tématem této práce je zpracování etična, zkaženosti a neřesti v dílech Thomase Middletona (1580-1627), významného anglického dramatika první poloviny 17. století. Konkrétně se práce pokouší prozkoumat Middletonovu dynamiku mezi morálním úpadkem a ctností, především v kontextu politických a společensko-kulturních trendů post-alžbětinských let, dobových dramatických konvencí a také autorovy kalvínské teologické perspektivy. Za tímto účelem zkoumá zobrazení nemorálnosti v několika Middletonových divadelních hrách, a také je porovnává s díly jeho současníků. Na základě nabytých poznatků se práce následně zabývá autorovou subverzí zaběhnutých jevištních vzorců alžbětinského a jakubovského divadla, a jejím významem pro etický rozměr jeho dramat.

Abstract:

This thesis analyzes the treatment of morality, vice, and corruption in the plays of Thomas Middleton (1580-1627), a prominent playwright of the Jacobean England. In particular, it focuses on his dynamics between depravity and virtue, and investigates their significance in the contexts of the dramatic conventions of the era, the political and socio-cultural developments in Middleton’s England, and the author’s Calvinist perspective. For this purpose, a number of Middleton’s plays are examined for their portrayal of immorality, and also compared to related works of his contemporaries. Based on the findings, the thesis explores the subversive nature of Middleton’s use of the era’s stock theatrical elements, as well as its implications for the moral dimension of the plays.
