Translation as Cultural Communication: The Chinese Translation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's stone

Abstract:

Práce zkoumá překlad knihy Harry Potter and the Philosopher´s Stone a představuje strategie, které překladatelka použila pro převedení jazykových i kulturně-společenských prvků utvářejících charakter tohoto příběhu. Práce posuzuje, do jaké míry je užití těchto strategií vhodné pro zachování sdělení myšlenky příběhu, a porovnává vyznění překladu oproti textu v anglickém jazyce. Na základě poznatků, vypozorovaných z procesu překladu, jsou určeny jazykové a kulturní prvky, jejichž překlad ovlivňuje vyznění sdělení a tím i čtenářovo přijetí daného díla. V analýze textu je sledováno převedení prvků vycházejících z kulturních a společenských zvyklostí Velké Británie a překlad výrazů a pasáží specifických pro anglický jazyk nebo existujících pouze v rámci tohoto příběhu. Ilustrována jsou řešení překladu antroponym, novotvarů, rýmovaných pasáží a slovních hříček.

Abstract:

The thesis studies the Chinese translation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher´s Stone as an example of modern popular literature and describes some of the strategies used by the translator in order to transmit the key linguistic and socio-cultural features of this story. The thesis analyses to what extent the use of these strategies is apropriate, as a way of precisely transmitting the idea of the story, and compares the meaning of the translated text with the English original. Based on results of the analysis of the translation process, the thesis highlights linguistic and cultural features particularly important to the meaning of the story and potentionally influencing reader´s perception of the text. Studied features are either based on British socio-cultural background or particular to English language (as opposed to Chinese) or to this story. Solutions include translation of antroponyms, neologisms, anagrams, rhymed passages and puns.
