Multiskilling as a Part of the Work Routines of Parachute Journalists

Abstract:

Autorka se ve výzkumné diplomové práci zabývá aktuálním trendem v zahraničním zpravodajství – vysíláním tzv. parachute journalists neboli zvláštních zahraničních zpravodajů k významným událostem ve světě. Tato skupina novinářů stále častěji nahrazuje stalé zpravodajské posty, které mediální organizace ruší kvůli ekonomickému tlaku a technologickým inovacím. Zvláštní zpravodajové jsou v práci zkoumáni z hlediska multiskillingu neboli souběžného využívání více způsobů sběru, zpracování a šíření informací. Prostřednictvím polostrukturovaných hloubkových rozhovorů se zvláštními zpravodaji a mediálními manažery se autorka snaží určit, zda a jak se multiskilling projevuje v pracovních rutinách zpravodajů na úrovni mediální, tematické a technické. Zkoumanými mediálními organizacemi jsou Česká televize, Český rozhlas, Česká tisková kancelář, Mladá fronta DNES a Respekt. Přínosem práce je teoretické a empirické uchopení problematiky, která je v českém prostředí dosud málo probádaná.

Abstract:

In the diploma thesis, the author deals with a current trend in foreign correspondence – covering world events by sending so called parachute journalists abroad. More and more this group of journalists is replacing traditional foreign correspondents who media organization withdraw from their posts due to economical pressure and technological innovations. In the diploma thesis, parachute journalists are being researched from the perspective of multiskilling – or, to put it differently – parallel use of more techniques of collecting, processing, and circulating information. Using semi-structured in-depth interviews with parachute journalists and media managers, the author tries to find out if and how multiskilling is demonstrated in the work routines of parachute journalists at the media, thematic, and technological level. The research specifically applies to these media organizations: Czech Television, Czech Radio, Czech Press Agency, Mladá fronta DNES, and Respekt. The diploma thesis is an asset to the academic environment because both multiskilling and foreign correspondence has been rarely researched in the Czech Republic.
