Differences in perception of police between university students in the Czech Republic and Illinois, focusing on feelings of fear and insecurity versus security and trust.

Abstract:

Cílem práce bylo zmapování rozdílů ve vnímání policie mezi vysokoškolskými studenty v České republice a Illinois, USA. Pro běžného člověka je policie nejviditelnější tváří státu, což znamená, že náš vztah k policii definuje náš vztah ke státu jako celku. Jak české „Pomáhat a chránit“, tak americké „To protect and to serve“ odkazuje k nejznámějšímu účelu a cíli policie, který však často není dosažen. Místo bezpečí policie často vzbuzuje spíše strach a místo důvěry mnohdy v občanech pěstuje spíše nedůvěru. Tento výzkum se tedy přesně na tyto pocity vnímané ve spojitosti s příslušníky policie a policií jako celkem zaměřuje. Data byla sbírána pomocí dotazníkového šetření na souboru studentů vysokých škol v České republice a Illinois (N = 377). Výsledky této práce podpořily stanovené hypotézy a přinesly také několik nových zjištění. Byl nalezen rozdíl mezi skupinou z ČR a z Illinois, a to jak v celkovém názoru a vztahu k policii, tak ve vnímaném strachu - bezpečí a důvěře - nedůvěře, přičemž se ukázalo, že studenti v České republice mají k policii kladnější vztah, více jí důvěřují a cítí se bezpečněji za přítomnosti příslušníka policie než studenti v Illinois. Dále bylo zjištěno, že rasové menšiny se ve vztahu k policii také mezi sebou liší – na všech úrovních (celkový vztah, důvěra a bezpečí) se nejhůře umístili černoši. Stejně tak pohlaví a příslušnost k sexuální menšině hraje roli – nejvíce negativní vztah, nejvíce strachu a nejméně důvěry pociťují vůči policii nebinární osoby a příslušníci sexuálních menšin. V závěru práce jsou poté diskutovány možné důvody zjištěných výsledků a také otázky do příštích výzkumů.

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis was to map the differences in the perception of the police between university students in the Czech Republic and Illinois, USA. For the average person, the police are the most visible face of the state, which means that our relationship with the police defines our relationship with the state as a whole. Both the Czech „Pomáhat a chránit“ and the American „To protect and to serve“ refer to the most well-known purpose and goal of the police, which, however, is often not fulfilled. Instead of safety, the police often inspire fear, and instead of trust, they often cultivate mistrust in citizens. This research therefore focuses precisely on these feelings perceived in connection with members of the police and the police as a whole. The data was collected using a questionnaire on a sample of university students in the Czech Republic and Illinois (N = 377). The results of this work supported the established hypotheses and also brought several new findings. A difference was found between the group from the Czech Republic and Illinois, both in the overall opinion and relationship to the police, as well as in the perceived fear - safety and trust - mistrust, while it turned out that students in the Czech Republic have a more positive attitude towards the police, they trust it more and feel safer with a police officer present than students in Illinois. It was also found that racial minorities also differ among themselves in relation to the police – blacks ranked worst on all levels (overall relationship, trust and safety). In the same way, gender and belonging to a sexual minority play a role – non-binary people and members of sexual minorities feel the most negative relationship, the most fear and the least trust towards the police. At the end of the work, the possible reasons for the results and questions for future research are discussed.
