Investigation of Factors That Influence Happiness of High School Students

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to determine and analyse personal and socio-economic factors that influence the happiness of high school students in Usti nad Labem, the Czech Rebublic. To do this I created and distributed a questionairre among 173 students from a medical high school in this town. The collected data were analysed using a multi-variate regression model with OLS coefficient approximation. The significant factors explaining reported satisfaction with life were: mood (positive effect), relationship with parents (positive effect), mental and physical health (positive effect), commuting time (negative effect) and type of habitation. Additional statistical tests were performed to provide a deeper understanding of the relationships between different variables. After interpreting all results, I compared my outcomes with other "happiness studies" among students. Three main determinants of happiness which were present in the studies are: relationships with friends and family, health and factors that determine daily routine (personal mastery, exercise and sport, normal sleep duration, etc.). It looks like happiness is the result of a balanced and healthy life with fulfilling relationships. Based on the results of this study, recommendations offered both to teenagers and to the general public are: "cultivate your relationships (especially relationships within the family)," "take care of your mental and physical health," "choose the environment in which you live carefully" and "beware of long commuting."

Abstract:

Cílem této studie bylo určit a analyzovat osobní a socio-ekonomické faktory, které mají vliv na pocit štěstí středoškolských studentů v Ústí nad Labem, Česká republika. Pro tento účel jsem vytvořil a distribuoval dotazník mezi 173 studentů ze střední zdravotnické školy v tomto městě. Shromážděná data byla analyzována pomocí vícenásobného regresního modelu s aproximací koeficientů pomocí metody nejmenších čtverců. Významnými faktory vysvětlujícími udávanou spokojenost se životem byly: momentální nálada (pozitivní efekt), vztah s rodiči (pozitivní efekt), psychické a fyzické zdraví (pozitivní efekt), doba dojíždění (negativní efekt) a typ obydlí. Pro hlubší porozumění vztahů mezi jednotlivými proměnnými byly provedeny další statistické testy. Po interpretaci výsledků jsem porovnal mé výstupy s dalšími studiemi zkoumajícími štěstí studentů. Tři hlavní determinanty štěstí, které byly v těchto studiích přítomny, jsou: vztahy s přáteli a rodinou, zdraví a faktory determinující denní režim (schopnost sebeovládání, cvičení a sport, běžná doba spánku, atd.). Vypadá to, že štěstí je výsledkem vyváženého a zdravého života s naplňujícími vztahy. Na základě výsledků této studie jsou formulována následující doporučení pro teenagery i pro veřejnost: "kultivujte vaše vztahy (obzvláště vztahy uvnitř rodiny)," "starejte se o své psychické a fyzické zdraví," "vybírejte si pečlivě prostředí, ve kterém žijete" a "vyvarujte se dlouhého dojíždění."
