The Life and Death of Minor Parties

Abstract:

Marginální politické strany stojí mimo pozornost politologie kvůli jejich předpokládané irelevanci a iracionalitě. Tato práce vyplňuje tuto mezeru pohledem na životní cykly marginální stran. Práce se zaměřuje na faktory, které ovlivňují vznik, soutěžení ve volbách a přetrvávání marginálních stran. Kromě právního rámce vznik a participace ve volbách je spojena s úpadkem parlamentních stran a stavem ekonomiky. Přetrvávání marginálních stran může být vysvětleno několika faktory jako zdroje držené těmito stranami, jejich ideologickým profilem a jejich původem. Nakonec se tato práce zabývá pohybem kandidátů mezi marginálními a parlamentními stranami. Shledává, že parlamentní strany zřídka nominují bývalé kandidáty marginálních stran. Můžeme vyvozovat, že integraci zabraňuje fakt, že parlamentní strany mají dostatek kandidátů a přeběhlíci čelí dilematu, protože vstup do parlamentní strany je spojen s kandidováním na nižší pozici na volebním lístku, které pravděpodobně nepřinese kandidátovi mandát bez značného počtu preferenčních hlasů.

Abstract:

Minor political parties represent a neglected area of political science because of their assumed irrelevance and irrationality. This thesis fills the gap by looking at the life cycles of minor parties. It studies what factors influence emergence, contestation of elections, and persistence of minor parties. Besides the legal framework, their emergence and participation in an election is associated with the decline of major parties and economic performance. The persistence of minor parties can be explained by several factors such as the resources the parties possess, their ideological profile, and their origin. Finally, this thesis explores candidate turnover between minor and major political parties. It finds that the major parties rarely nominate former candidates from minor parties. We may assume that integrative tendencies are thwarted by the fact that major parties usually have a sufficient number of candidates and party switchers face a trade-off as joining a major party is associated with running in a lower position on a ballot which is unlikely to bring a mandate to the candidate without a large number of preference votes.
