Media representation as spectacularization of Václav Havel's burying

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá charakteristikou mediální agendy smrti a pohřbívání prvního českého prezidenta Václava Havla z pohledu užitých editoriálních postupů, interpretovaných z perspektivy teorie spektakularizace. Koncept spektáklu podle Guy Deborda (2007 [1992]) a Douglase Kellnera (2003) je klíčovým teoretickým východiskem této práce, která se řadí do oblasti kritických teorií médií. Spektáklem zde rozumím tendenci médií zobrazovat realitu skrze zdánlivě jedinečné události, vyzdvihovat kontroverze a zábavu, estetické detaily a dramatické okamžiky, celebrity a davy. Prostřednictvím kvantitativní obsahové a diskurzivní analýzy práce zjišťuje, v jaké míře a v jakých kontextech se aspekty spektáklu v mediální agendě Havlova pohřbívání vyskytovaly. Analýza vybraných článků ze tří českých deníků (Blesku, MF Dnes, Práva) ukazuje, že deníky shodně konstruovaly pohřbívání jako rituální drama o dvou jednáních. V prvním jednání - v období s vyšší mírou spektakularizace a vyšším mediálním pokrytím - bylo pohřbívání zobrazeno jako výjimečná událost odehrávající se na jevišti s hvězdnou účastí celebrit a davem obecenstva a bylo nabízeno ke sledování a nazírání jako exkluzivní zboží, zábavná kulturní akce; publiku tohoto mediálního spektáklu byla připsána jednotná identita. Ve druhém jednání - v období nižšího mediálního pokrytí a nižší míry spektakularizace - byl příběh o Havlově pohřbívání i rituál přechodu uzavřen symbolickým uvedením zemřelého do pantheonu významných osobností prostřednictvím záměru přejmenovat po Václavu Havlovi letiště Ruzyně. Hlavní zjištění výzkumu spočívá v identifikaci shodných editoriálních postupů a diskurzivních strategií deníků, které jsou jinak odlišné svou politickou orientací (levice-pravice) i editoriální ideologií (bulvární-seriózní).

Abstract:

The diploma thesis is focused on characterizing the media agenda of death and burying of the first Czech president Václav Havel and primarily its editorial strategies which are interpreted from the theoretical perspective of spectacle. The concept of spectacle according to Guy Debord (2007 [1992]) and Douglas Kellner (2003) is a key theoretical basis of this work, which belongs to the critical theory of the media. Spectacle is herein understood as the tendency of the media to show reality through seemingly unique events, to highlight the controversies and entertainment, aesthetic details and dramatic moments, celebrities and crowds. Using the quantitative content and discourse analysis, the thesis investigates the extent and the contexts, which the aspects of spectacle occurred in. Analysis of selected articles from three Czech daily newspapers (Blesk, MF Dnes, Právo) finds that all the newspapers depicted the burying as a ritual drama of two acts. In the first act - more spectacularized and more covered period - the burying was showed as an exceptional event taking place on a stage with participation of celebrities and a crowd of spectators and it was offered to the audience as exclusive goods, entertaining cultural event; the audience of this media spectacle was discursively unified. In the second act - less spectacularized and less covered period - the story of Havel's burying and the rite of passage were closed by bringing the deceased one symbolically into the pantheon of personalities through the intention to rename the airport Ruzyně to Václav Havel airport. The main conclusion lies in identification of the same editorial and discursive strategies of the analyzed newspapers which are otherwise different in their political orientation (left-right) and editorial ideology (tabloid-serious).
