The Relation between the Achievement Motivation and English Learning Strategies at Elementary School

Abstract:

Diplomová práce zkoumá vztah mezi používáním strategií učení angličtině u žáků Základní školy ve Svitávce a jejich výkonovou motivací. Používání strategií podle řečových dovedností a vybraných jazykových prostředků bylo zjišťováno pomocí on-line dotazníku pro žáky základní školy (Vlčková, Přikrylová 2010). Ke zjišťování motivace byl použit dotazník výkonové motivace (Pavelková, Hrabal 2010), na jehož základě byli žáci rozděleni do jednotlivých typů.U těchto typů je porovnávána míra používání strategií učení angličtině. V teoretické části jsou presentována východiska výzkumu zahrnující teorii výkonové motivace a strategií učení cizímu jazyku (jejich klasifikaci, výuku a podporu). V praktické části je popsána koncepce metodologie a výsledky výzkumu. Na základě výzkumných zjištění jsou v práci předloženy návrhy pro rozvoj strategií ve výuce cizího jazyka a pro práci s výkonovou motivací ve škole. Práce také slouží k autoevaluaci Základní školy ve Svitávce v oblasti podpory a používání strategií učení a v oblasti výkonové motivace žáků.

Abstract:

The thesis examines relationship between reported pupils´ English learnig strategy use from The Elementary School in Svitávka and their achievement motivation. The Strategy Questionnaire available on-line was used (Vlčková, Přikrylová 2010). It measures pupils’ perception of their strategy use according to the four language skills. To measure motivation The Achievement Motivation Questionnaire (Hrabal, Pavelková 2010) available on-line was used. According to it pupils are classified into the particular types. The types are analysed in connectin with the results of strategy questionnaire. The theoretical part presents the conceptual background of the research including achievement motivation and foreign learning strategies theory, their classification, instruction and support. The empirical part describes research metodology and research results. Based on the research results some suggestions are made for developing learning strategies and for the support of achievement motivation at school. The thesis serves for self-evaluation of The Elementary School in Svitávka in the domain of the English learning strategy use and support and in the area of achievement motivation as well.
