Gender analysis in psychological practice: examples from counseling and therapy

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá studiem genderu v psychologii, a to zejména za využití sociálně konstrukcionistického přístupu. Hlavním cílem je v kontextu rozvoje genderových studií přispět k diskusi o tom, jakým způsobem je možné tuto problematiku v psychologii zkoumat a prakticky využívat. V teoretické části představuji východiska feministického přístupu k psychologii (např. Burman, 1999, Bačová, 2009, Hare-Mustin, Marecek, 1990, 1994), a dále popisuji vztah feministek k poradenství a terapii (Ussher, 1992, Cosgrove, 2002). Představení sociálně konstrukcionistické perspektivy je doprovázeno kapitolou uvádějící limity tohoto přístupu (Burr, 1999, Yardley, 1996, Law, 2004). Teoretická část pokračuje popisem některých možností studia genderu v psychologii (Hare-Mustin, Marecek, 1988, 1994) a stručně uvádí rysy feministického poradenství/terapie (Israeli, Santor, 2000, Ballou, West, 2000). Výzkumná část je založena na polostrukturovaných rozhovorech s osobami působícími v oblasti psychoterapie či psychologického poradenství. Předmětem výzkumu bylo využití konceptu genderu v jejich každodenní práci. Výzkum byl realizován v České republice a v Norsku. Získané výpovědi jsou zpracovány především za využití teoretické tematické analýzy (Braun, Clarke, 2006). Výsledky jsou rozčleněny do třech hlavních částí: (1) porozumění genderu u "těch druhých", (2) reflexe genderu v terapeutickém vztahu a (3) od jednotlivce ke společenské změně. Ve výrocích byla identifikována praxe, kdy je zároveň používán diskurs genderových rozdílů i individuální jedinečnosti. Jiný pohled na genderové aspekty umožňuje i zjištění, kdy stejně popisované stereotypní chování bylo terapeuty zcela jinak vyhodnoceno s ohledem na spolupráci s klientem. To může znamenat, že zapojení této perspektivy v praxi nemusí nutné vést k zjednodušeným, kauzálně vystavěným, vazbám. Přemýšlení nad tím, jak gender vstupuje do terapeutického vztahu, upozornilo na potřebu analýzy ještě o krok dříve – jak vůbec je konstruována profesionální role terapeuta/ky? Výzkum naznačil, že to, že se o genderu ve spojitosti s profesionalitou málo mluví, může znamenat implicitní akceptování maskulinní normy. Způsoby, jakými gender vstupuje přímo do vztahu, se nejeví být jednoznačně uchopitelné. Určitá shoda panuje nad tím, že vztah ovlivňuje, a to i na straně terapeuta i na straně klienta, ale konkrétní podoby v praxi se mohou výrazně lišit. Poslední téma reaguje na feministický apel „osobní je politické“ a zkoumá, jakým způsobem studium genderu informuje psychologickou praxi s ohledem na veřejnou angažovanost. Prvním postojem je aktivní zapojení v podobě například spolupráce s občanskými sdruženími. Druhým je spíše zahrnutí společenské roviny přímo v terapeutické či poradenské praxi. Veřejná angažovanost je každopádně v českém prostřední vnímána jako téma, ke kterému je vhodné přistoupit s vysokou mírou obezřetnosti.

Abstract:

Thesis presents study of gender in psychology using mainly social constructionism as a theoretical point of departure. Main goal is to contribute to discussion about how gender perspective might be applied in the psychology, both on theoretical and practical level. In the theoretical part of the thesis the aim is to present feminist approach in psychology (e.g. Burman, 1999, Bačová, 2009, Hare-Mustin, Marecek, 1990, 1994), and towards counseling and therapy (Ussher, 1992, Cosgrove, 2002). Introduction to social constructionism is followed by chapter on limits of this perspective (Burr, 1999, Yardley, 1996, Law, 2004). Further described are various approaches to study of gender in psychology (Hare-Mustin, Marecek, 1988, 1994) and typical features of feminist counseling/therapy (Israeli, Santor, 2000, Ballou, West, 2000). Research part is based on semi-structured interviews with professionals in psychotherapy and psychological counseling. Research focus on how gender perspective is applied in their everyday practice. Data were collected in the Norway and the Czech Republic. Chosen method for analysis of responses was theoretical thematic analysis ((Braun, Clarke, 2006). Results are arranged in three main topics: (1) understanding gender of "the other", (2) gender in therapeutic relationship reflection, (3) from individual to a societal change. It was identified that respondents simultaneously use both discourses of gender difference and individuality. Different understanding of gender is made possible by seeing, that the same stereotypical behavior can be assessed completely differently in regard to further therapeutic cooperation. Thus contributing to understanding gender perspective as not inevitably leading to simplified, causal, relations. Thinking about how gender enters therapeutic relationship demands analysis a step earlier – how is professional role constructed? Research suggests that low level of gender consciousness could mean acceptance of masculine norm. However, ways of how gender influences relationships are not easy to grasp. There is certain agreement on its effects; both on side of therapist and client, but specific manifestation might be different. Last theme reacts on the feminist motto "personal is political" and explores ways how study of gender informs psychological practice in regard to public engagement. First attitude is activity like cooperation with civil organizations. Second describes involvement of structural social perspective directly in therapeutic practice. In the Czech context public engagement is certainly issue approached with caution.
