International Trade in Goods as a Mean for Enforcing BRICS’ Influence to the World Economy

Abstract:

Aktuální trendy světového obchodu jsou charakteristické změnou v realokaci importních a exportních destinací, měnícím se postavením dominantních mocností a podstatným zvýšením vzájemného obchodu mezi rozvojovými a rozvíjejícími se zeměmi. Tyto trendy se promítají do zvyšujícího se významu rychle se rozvíjejících ekonomik BRICS. Ze závěrů summitů BRICS vyplývá, že obchod je jedním z pilířů jejich ekonomické spolupráce. Mezinárodní obchod se zde proto nabízí jako vhodný nástroj pro zkoumání prohlubující se kooperace mezi danými ekonomikami a prosazování jejich vlivu ve světové ekonomice. Hlavním cílem disertační práce je posoudit obchodní vztahy BRICS v kontextu jejich parciálních zájmů a rostoucího významu ve světové ekonomice a na základě statistických údajů o exportech a importech zboží analyzovat obchodní vazby BRICS, jejich změny a vývojové trendy. Z výsledků práce vyplývá, že země BRICS se stále více prosazují v celosvětovém obchodě i když příčiny jejich exportních úspěchů jsou dle CMS analýzy odlišné. Jejich vzájemný obchod roste rychleji než jejich obchod se zbytkem světa, ale stále spolu neobchodují na takové úrovni, která by odpovídala jejich potenciálu.

Abstract:

Current trends in the world trade are characterized by a change in the re-allocation of import and export destinations, changing position of the dominant world superpowers and a substantial surge in mutual trade between developed and developing countries. These trends are reflected in the increasing importance of BRICS emerging economies. Conclusions from the BRICS summits show that trade is one of the pillars of economic cooperation. Therefore, international trade provides a useful tool for exploring the deepening cooperation between the respective economies and the enforcement of their influence in the world economy. The main aim of the dissertation thesis is to assess BRICS' trade relations in the context of partial interests and growing importance in the world economy, and on the basis of statistical data on exports and imports of goods to analyze trade relations, their changes and trends. Results reveal that BRICS countries are increasingly gaining importance in global trade, although the causes of their export success is different according to the CMS analysis. Their mutual trade is growing faster than their trade with the rest of the world, but they still do not trade together at a level that would match their potential.
