Grammar Activities in English Textbooks for Lower-Secondary Schools

Abstract:

This master's thesis analyses how English language textbooks for lower-secondary school approach grammar. The thesis is divided into two main parts - the theoretical part and the analytical part. In the theoretical part, textbooks are first introduced in general, followed by chapters focusing on English language textbooks. Chapters addressing grammar teaching follow. Final sections of the theoretical part include chapters on the characteristics of learners in the lower-secondary school. The main part of the entire master's thesis is the analytical part, which examines what grammatical units and types of grammar exercises are included in selected textbooks. Three research questions were established: How is grammar organised in the selected English language textbooks? What types of grammar activities do the selected English language textbooks use? Do the individual textbooks differ in the types of grammar activities employed? The research sample consists of the series of textbooks: Project, Your Space, and Bloggers. The analysis first addresses the grammatical units present in these textbooks and how they are arranged. Subsequently, an analysis of grammar exercises located in the grammar sections of textbooks (excluding Bloggers, which does not have grammar sections) is conducted. The analysis indicates that all textbooks systematically arrange grammatical phenomena from simple to more complex ones. Additionally, a certain cyclical structure in the arrangement of grammatical units is visible, significantly aiding the effectiveness of language acquisition. The analysis of grammar exercises reveals that all textbooks predominantly utilize the same types of exercises. The most diverse range of grammar exercises is offered by Your Space textbook series.

ABSTRAKT Tato diplomová práce zkoumá, jakým způsobem učebnice anglického jazyka pro druhý stupeň pojímají gramatiku. Diplomová práce je rozdělena na 2 hlavní části - část teoretickou a část analytickou. V teoretické části jsou nejdříve obecně představeny učebnice, poté se kapitoly věnují učebnicím anglického jazyka. Následují kapitoly, které se týkají výuky gramatiky. V závěru teoretické části se nachází kapitoly o charakteristikách žáků druhého stupně základních škol. Stěžejní části celé diplomové práce je analytická část, která zkoumá, jaké gramatické jevy a jaké typy procvičování gramatiky obsahují vybrané učebnice anglického jazyka. Byly stanoveny tří výzkumné otázky: Jak je v každé řadě učebnic gramatika řazena? Jaké typy gramatických cvičení využívají vybrané řady učebnic anglického jazyka? Používají vybrané učebnice anglického jazyka odlišné typy gramatických cvičení? Výzkumný vzorek sestává z řad učebnic Project, Your Space a Bloggers. Rozbor se nejprve věnuje tomu, jaké gramatické jevy se v daných učebnicích objevují a jak jsou řazeny. Následně probíhá analýza gramatických cvičení, které se nachází v gramatických sekcích učebnic (kromě Bloggers, ta gramatické sekce nemá). Z analýzy vyplývá, že všechny učebnice řadí gramatické jevy systematicky od jednoduchých jevů po složitější. Zároveň je v řazení gramatických celků viditelná určitá cyklická struktura, která výrazně napomáhá efektivitě osvojování si jazyka. Z analýzy gramatických cvičení vyplývá, že všechny učebnice převážně využívají stejné druhy cvičení. Nejpestřejší nabídku gramatických cvičení obsahuje řada učebnic Your Space.
