Understanding the experience of women with skin picking disorder

Abstract:

Cílem magisterské diplomové práce je přiblížit zkušenost žen s dermatilománií, poruchou spočívající v opakovaném narušováním kůže i přes snahu takovému chování zabránit. V teoretické části je tato porucha představena a provázána s tzv. body focused repetive behavior disorders (BFRBD), tedy poruchami zaměřené na tělo s repetitivním charakterem. Nastíněny jsou i teoretické modely dermatilománie a možnosti léčby. V praktické části je stanovena výzkumná otázka zkoumající žitou zkušenost žen s dermatilománií a možné dopady na respondentky, která byla zkoumána za využití interpretativní fenomenologické analýzy (IPA). K analýze byly využity polostrukturované rozhovory pěti žen. Celkem bylo identifikováno šest hlavních témat včetně dopadů dermatilománie nebo prožívání dermatilománie v interakci s okolím. Data jsou prezentována s důrazem na propojování témat napříč případy a jsou kriticky zhodnocena s aktuálním vědeckým poznání v oblasti BFRB poruch.

Abstract:

The aim of the master's thesis is to describe the experience of women with skin picking disorder (SPD) a disorder consisting of recurrent episodes of skin damage despite efforts to prevent such behavior. In the theoretical part, this disorder is presented and linked to the so-called “body focused repetitive behavior disorders” (BFRBD), i.e. disorders focused on the body with a repetitive character. Theoretical models of SPD and treatment options are also outlined. In the practical part, a research question examining the lived experience of women with SPD and the possible effects on the respondents are established, which were obtained by using interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA). Semi-structured interviews of five women were used for the analysis. In total, six main themes were identified, including the impact of SPD or the experience of SPD in interaction with the environment. Data are presented with an emphasis on linking themes across cases and are critically appraised with current scientific knowledge in the field of BFRB disorders.
