Chinese Cultural Elite during the 18th Century

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce představuje život čínské kulturní elity 18. století na příkladech tří slavných literátů – Zheng Banqiaoa, Wu Jingzia a Ji Yuna –, kteří se významně zapsali do kulturních dějin Číny. V 18. století představovali literáti pouze skrovnou, nicméně důležitou část čínské populace. Literátem, respektive vzdělancem se mohl stát každý, kdo absolvoval alespoň jeden ze tří stupňů úřednických zkoušek. Literáti, kteří neměli dostatek financí ani důležitých kontaktů většinou působili na méně lukrativních postech, například jako učitelé. Ti úspěšnější získali místo v úřadě a mnohdy měli možnost aktivně se podílet na chodu státu. Tato práce je rozdělena do čtyř částí. První část stručně charakterizuje období, ve kterém kulturní elita žila, představuje qingskou společnost a zkouškový systém v 18. století. Zbylé části se věnují jednotlivým literátům. Podrobně popisují nástup literátů do úřadu, s tím spojený kariérní růst, popřípadě pád, a to na základě analýzy a následné kompilace dostupných pramenů a literatury. Závěrem práce vykresluje odpovídající obraz čínské kulturní elity v 18. století.

Abstract:

This thesis discusses the life of Chinese cultural elite during the 18th century based on the example of three well-known literati: Zheng Banqiao, Wu Jingzi and Ji Yun, who significantly contributed to the cultural history of China. In the 18th century, the literati formed a modest, yet important part of the Chinese population. Anyone who passed at least one of the three-level imperial examinations could become a literatus – or more precisely a scholar. Literati who did not have enough finances, nor important relationships usually worked in less lucrative positions, such as teachers. The most successful individuals obtained a position in bureaucracy and often had the opportunity to actively participate in running the state. This thesis is divided into four parts. The first part briefly describes the historical and socio-cultural context of the literati, mainly by discussing the Qing society and the Imperial examination system in the 18th century. The remaining parts of the thesis will focus on the aforementioned literati individuals. Through the analysis of available sources and literature, a detailed description of the career path, and consequently the difficulties associated with the induction into bureaucratic government posts is presented. Overall, this thesis aims to provide a depiction of the Chinese cultural elite in the 18th century.
