Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce si klade za cíl provést analýzu románu Bílé zuby od autorky Zadie Smith, a to především se zaměřením na téma krize. Práce zkoumá, jakou roli hrají náboženství (zejména křesťanství a islám) a rozmanité kultury (západní a východní) v multikulturní Británii, a také se zabývá následky konfliktu, který je důsledkem rozkolu dílčích etnik. Krize zapříčiňuje osobní zklamání, kulturní míšení a různé formy extremismu. Jedním z cílů je taktéž vyzdvihnout způsob, jakým uznávaná autorka zobrazuje problémy současného světa. Z toho důvodu práce usiluje o uznání jedinečného důvtipu, se kterým Smith představuje velice závažná témata.

Abstract:

The aim of this diploma thesis is to analyse Zadie Smith’s novel White Teeth with the main focus on the evoked sense of crisis. It deals with the role of multiple religions (especially Christianity and Islam) and cultures (Western and Eastern) in multicultural Britain and explores the effects of the conflict created by the emerged rift among various ethnicities. The crisis results in personal disillusionment, cultural hybridity and several forms of extremism. One of the goals is to also highlight the acclaimed author's approach to portraying the contemporary issues which reach beyond the novel, therefore the thesis aims to acknowledge the ability to present serious issues with Smith's unique wit.
