Czech small farmers and environmentally sound practices. Motives and attitudes

Abstract:

Evropské zemědělství se vyznačuje výraznou nadprodukcí pocházející z intenzivního zemědělství. To však s sebou nese řadu problémů, jež jsou nuceny orgány Evropské unie i jednotlivých členských států řešit. Jedním z nástrojů k dosažení zamýšlených cílů je zavedení společné zemědělské politiky, která se zaměřuje, mimo jiné, na podporu šetrných způsobů hospodaření a produkci bio potravin. Tato práce se zabývá otázkou, zda-li a za jakých podmínek jsou současní drobní čeští zemědělci ochotni přecházet na ekologické zemědělství. Při zkoumání této problematiky se autor zaměřuje zejména na postoje farmářů k ekologickému zemědělství a na motivy a bariéry zavedení těchto principů a postupů šetrného hospodaření na jejich farmě. V první části uvádí základní údaje o zemědělství v České republice a vývoji ekologického zemědělství v posledních letech a představuje fenomén selství. Dále uvádí odpovědi sedláků, které následně konfrontuje s teoretickými východisky a snaží se podat odpovědi na základní výzkumné otázky.

Abstract:

European agriculture is characterised by significant overproduction stemming from intensive agriculture. This, however, brings along various problems which have to be dealt with by both the European Union and the individual member states. One of the instruments which can help reach intended goals is the introduction of the Common Agricultural Policy. This policy is, inter alia, focussed on promotion of environmentally friendly forms of agriculture and production of bio food products. This thesis tries to find an answer to the question, whether and under what conditions the small Czech farmers are willing to shift to ecological agriculture. When conducting a research into this area, I mostly focus on farmers' attitudes towards ecological agriculture and also motives and barriers, introduction of the abovementioned principles and environmentally friendly procedures in their farms. In the first part of the thesis, the author provides basic information on agriculture in the Czech republic and on development of ecological agriculture in recent years. It also addresses the phenomenon of peasantry. The thesis further includes statements of peasants which are confronted with theoretical premises and consequently tries to answer the basic research questions.
