The Relationship Between Happiness, Social Support and Attachment and Their Specifics in Dog Owners

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá vztahy mezi štěstím, sociální oporou a vztahovou vazbou a popisuje, jak mohou tyto komponenty souviset s vlastnictvím psa. V teoretické části shrnujeme základní dosavadní poznatky z těchto oblastí a zaměřujeme se na představení většího množství zahraničních studií, kde si jako předmět zkoumání vybrali výhody plynoucí z vlastnictví domácích mazlíčků a charakteristiky jejich majitelů. V empirické části popisujeme vlastní kvantitativní výzkum, kterého se zúčastnilo 198 respondentů. Testování probíhalo on-line, a to pomocí Oxfordského dotazníku štěstí (Oxford Happiness Questionnaire), Dotazníku sociální opory – MOS (Social Support Survey – MOS) a sebeposuzovací škály Experiences in Close Relationships. Na našem souboru osob jsme potvrdili korelaci mezi štěstím a sociální oporou, zatímco vztah mezi vlastnictvím psa a štěstím se neprokázal. Majitelé psů z našeho souboru však vykazovali vyšší míru sociální opory, a také mezi ně patřily především ženy.

Abstract:

This master thesis deals with relationships between happiness, social support and attachment and describes how these components can be interrelated to owning a dog. In the theoretical part, we summarize basic existing knowledge about these topics while focusing on bringing in a larger amount of foreign studies that were focused on benefits of pet-owning and on characteristics of the pet-owners. In the empirical part of the thesis, we present our own quantitative research, which had 198 participants. The testing was carried out on-line, using Oxford Happiness Questionnaire, Social Support Survey – MOS and Experience in Close Relationship scale. In our sample, we confirmed a correlation between happiness and social support, however, the relationship between dog-owning and happiness was not confirmed. Dog owners in our research showed higher rate of social support and there was a higher number of women among them.
