The Blue Engel: The filmization of the Heinrich Mann´s novel "Small Town Tyrant"

Abstract:

This work tries in general to sum up the problems in filming literary texts, and specifically analyses the film adaptation of Heinrich Mann's novel `Professor Unrat'. This book, written in 1905 was made into a film in 1930 by director Josef von Sternberg. This work is divided into a theoretical and a practical part. The theoretical part will cover an overview of the history of film adaptations of novels, the definition of adaptation of literature and the types of adaptations of literature. The difference between various forms of adaptation here is based on the theories by Helmut Kreuzer and Wolfgang Gast. The practical part is covered by analysis of films in relation to models of literature. The investigation will from this point on will be based on `Handlungsstrukturen' and the grouping of people in the films so that a comparison between book and film is possible. The comparison of the `Handlungsstrukturen' and the grouping of people in the films will widen to some questions. The target here is to find out what sort of type of adaptations (with regard to the definitions of Helmus Kreuzers and Wolfgang Gasts) this is related to, and whether and how literature can be translated through the medium of film

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá problematikou filmového zpracování literární látky všeobecně a konkrétně je vyhotovena analýza filmu "Der Blaue Engel``, jakožto adaptace románu Heinricha Manna "Professor Unrat``, který vyšel v roce 1905, a v roce 1930 byl režisérem Josefem von Sternbergem zfilmován. Práce je rozdělena na část teoretickou a praktickou. Teoretická část se zabývá literární adaptací jako takovou, dějinami literární adaptace a jejími druhy. Při rozdělení druhů literární adaptace se vychází z teorií Helmuta Kreuzera, jehož typologie rozděluje literární adaptace do čtyř základních typů. Praktická část se zabývá samotnou analýzou filmu s ohledem na literární předlohu. Aby bylo možno srovnání, musí být zkoumány ty elementy, které jsou charakteristické a vzájemně srovnatelné pro literární i filmové dílo, a to jsou: děj a konstelace postav, jejíž úvahy jsou rozvedeny o další specifičtější otázky. Zkoumáním bude zjištěno, o jakou adaptaci se v případě filmu "Modrý anděl`` jedná a jestli může být literatura vůbec v médium film přeměněna. Vzniklý film by měl být ale primárně srovnáván jako autonomní umělecké dílo a teprve sekundárně s ohledem na literární předlohu
