Grand strategy of George Bush Jr.: continuity or change?

Anotace:

Hlavním cílem práce je analýza změn v americké grand strategy na přelomu 21. století. Práce se zabývá převážně prezidentskými obdobími George W. Bushe. Rok po jeho nástupu do funkce totiž členové teroristické skupiny al-Káida spáchali teroristický útok na území Spojených států. Tento útok byl definitivním potvrzením existence nových hrozeb pro americkou bezpečnost. V reakci na události 11. září Spojené státy připravily novou grand strategy, která měla nové hrozby reflektovat. Do veřejného povědomí se strategie zapsala jako Bushova doktrína. Důsledkem nové grand strategy tak byla odpověď na teror v podobě intervence do Afghánistánu v roce 2001 a o dva roky později i do Iráku.

Abstract:

The main objective of this thesis is to analyze the changes in American grand strategy at the turn of the 21st century. The thesis deals mainly with the presidential terms of George W. Bush. One year after he took office, members of the terrorist group al-Qaeda committed a terrorist attack on the territory of the United States. This attack was a definitive confirmation of the existence of new threats to American security. In response to the events of 11 September, the United States prepared a new grand strategy to reflect the new threats. The strategy became known to the public as the Bush Doctrine. The consequence of the new grand strategy was a response to terror in the form of intervention in Afghanistan in 2001 and two years later in Iraq.
