Bartoňové z Dobenína: National Identity Through Time

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá národní identifikací podnikatelských elit v českých zemích v období na sklonku existence Rakouska-Uherska a ve dvacátých a třicátých letech dvacátého století. Detailně zkoumá příklad východočeské podnikatelské rodiny Bartoňů z Dobenína. Na základě studia pramenů jsou zmapovány jejich rozsáhlé aktivity v řadě oblastí společenského života: jejich politické angažmá, mecenášství a charitativní činnost, jejich práce pro nejrůznější spolky a organizace. Jedna rovina práce se zabývá analýzou sítí kontaktů, které Bartoňové udržovali, a ukazuje, jakým způsobem určitý segment soudobých elit kooperoval a jak se do činnosti a životního stylu těchto elit promítala otázka národní identifikace. Ve druhém plánu pak práce zkoumá to, jak bylo na Bartoně nahlíženo coby na nový typ národních hrdinů, které národ doposud postrádal. Díky tomuto rozboru bylo možné dospět k určitým zobecňujícím tvrzením vztahujícím se k problematice národa a národní identity v období poslední fáze národotvorného procesu a po jeho završení.

Abstract:

The thesis aims to analyze a problem of national identification of business elites in Bohemia in the last years of existence of Austria-Hungary and in the 1920s and 1930s Czechoslovakia. A case study dealing with a family of businessmen from Eastern Bohemia, whose members contributed significantly to the development of Bohemian textile industry, is presented. The author analyzes various activities of Josef Bartoň and his brother Cyril Bartoň who were active in local politics, became well-known for their philanthropic activities and worked for numerous institutions organizing various aspects of national life. A complex network of contacts that the Bartoňs maintained is outlined to show how one group of elites closely cooperated and how their national identification was reflected in their style of life. The thesis also investigates the way the industrial elites were portrayed as new national heroes that the nation had lacked before. Such analysis enabled the author to pronounce certain general conclusions about the problem of nations and national identity in the late phase of nation-building in Bohemia and after its termination.
