The experience of young adults with institutional care

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na zkušenosti mladých dospělých, kteří pobývali v dětském domově minimálně po dobu dvou let. Ústavní péče tvoří podstatnou část oblasti sociálního resortu a týká se zranitelné skupiny dětí. Výzkum zkušeností těchto osob může přispět k lepšímu porozumění jejich jedinečné perspektivě. Cílem práce je prozkoumat zkušenost mladých dospělých z původní rodiny i dětského domova a možné psychické a vztahové obtíže. Kvalitativní výzkum byl proveden formou polostrukturovaných rozhovorů s devíti mladými dospělými. Metodou tematické analýzy bylo identifikováno 12 hlavních témat a 10 podtémat, která jsou vzájemně propojená a mapují zkušenosti účastníků z původní rodiny, zkušenosti z dětského domova a aspekty, které z nich vyplývají. Účastníci se v původní rodině setkali s mnoha překážkami při vytváření jistého vztahu s rodičem. Nejčastěji se potýkali se zanedbáváním, násilím a závislostí rodičů na alkoholu. Zpětně reflektují prostředí dětského domova jako příznivé. Zdůrazňují význam podporujících vztahů s vychovateli a důležitost přijímajícího kolektivu. Účastníci ve svých rozhovorech popisují obtíže s vyjadřováním emocí a udržováním vztahů, pocity prázdnoty, nedůvěru a opatrnost k druhým lidem. Výsledky této práce mohou sloužit jako informační zdroj pro praxi v dětských domovech a inspirace pro vychovatele při vytváření metodiky odpovídající potřebám dětí.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis focuses on the experiences of young adults who have stayed in children's home for at least two years. Residential care forms a substantial part of the social work sector and involves a vulnerable group of children. Research into the experiences of these individuals can contribute to a better understanding of their unique perspectives. The aim of this thesis is to explore the experience of both the original family and the children's home and possible psychological and relational difficulties. Qualitative research was conducted through semi-structured interviews with nine young adults. Using a thematic analysis method, twelve main themes and ten sub-themes were identified, which are interrelated and map the participants' experiences of their original family, their experiences of the children's home, and aspects that arise from these. Participants experienced many barriers to forming a secure relationship with a parent in their original family. They often faced neglect, violence, and parental alcohol dependency. In retrospect, they reflected on the orphanage environment as supportive. They stress the importance of supportive relationships with caregivers and the importance of an accepting team. In their interviews, participants describe difficulties in expressing emotions and maintaining relationships, feelings of emptiness, mistrust, and wariness of other people. The results of this work can inform practice in children's homes and inspire educators in developing a methodology appropriate to the needs of children.
