A Quantitative Analysis: Challenges Faced by Secondary Level English School Teachers in Rural Areas of Pakistan.

Abstract:

This study explores the challenges faced by English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers at the secondary level in rural Punjab, Pakistan. Using a quantitative cross-sectional survey, data were collected from 33 teachers through a structured questionnaire covering institutional, teacher-related, student-related, and socio-cultural factors. The findings indicate that student-related challenges are the most significant, including limited exposure to English, speaking anxiety, weak foundational skills, and reliance on memorization. Institutional issues such as overcrowded classrooms, lack of resources, and poor learning environments further hinder effective teaching. Teacher-related challenges are moderate and largely influenced by contextual constraints. Additionally, socio-cultural factors, including low parental involvement, exam-oriented systems, and the dominance of local languages, negatively impact student motivation and engagement. The study concludes that these challenges are interconnected and require a comprehensive approach involving teacher training, curriculum improvement, better resource allocation, and supportive educational policies to enhance ESL teaching and reduce the rural-urban educational gap.
