The Stability of Coresident Partnership After First Birth Before and After 1989 in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Cílem předkládané diplomové práce bylo analyzovat stabilitu koresidenčních partnerství po narození prvního dítěte v České republice a sledovat, zda v této stabilitě došlo k nějaké změně po roce 1989. Práce je složena ze dvou částí – teoretické a empirické. Teoretická část se zabývá tématy spojenými s narozením dítěte, vstupem do manželství a nesezdaným soužitím. Soustředí se přitom zejména na to, jakým způsobem dané události ovlivňují stabilitu vztahu a jaké demografické změny v souvislosti s nimi můžeme pozorovat po roce 1989 v České republice. Pro analýzu v empirické části práce byla použita data z Generations and Gender Survey pro Českou republiku z roku 2005, která byla analyzována pomocí analýzy přežití, konkrétně Coxovy regrese. Předpokládala jsem, že na stabilitu koresidenčního vztahu po narození prvního dítěte bude mít negativní vliv nesezdané soužití, a to jak na začátku vztahu, tak při narození dítěte, zatímco vstup do manželství bude stabilizujícím prvkem. Dále jsem předpokládala, že negativní vliv nesezdaného soužití bude v čase klesat, zatímco význam vstupu do manželství zesílí. Výsledky ukázaly, že uzavření sňatku je stabilizujícím prvkem a síla tohoto efektu roste v čase. Také negativní vliv nesezdaného soužití přetrvává v čase, nejsilnějším destabilizujícím prvkem je však sama kohorta roku narození dítěte, kdy ženy, jejichž dítě se narodilo do kohorty roku narození po roce 1989, mají dvakrát vyšší pravděpodobnost rozpadu koresidenčního partnerství po narození dítěte.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to analyse the stability of co-resident partnerships after the birth of the first child in the Czech Republic and to analyse the change in this stability after the year 1989. The thesis is divided into two parts – theoretical and empirical. The theoretical part is dealing with the themes connected to the birth of the child, entering marriage and cohabitation. The focus is mainly on the ways how these events affect the stability of the partnership and which demographic changes related to them can we observe. Data from the Generations and Gender Survey for the Czech Republic from the year 2005 were analysed using the survival analysis, concretely Cox regression, in the empirical part. I expected that premarital cohabitation either before or after the birth of the child will negatively affect the stability of the co-resident partnership after the birth of the first child while entering marriage will be the stabilizing element. I also expected that this negative effect of premarital cohabitation will decline in time while positive effect of marriage will grow in time. The results indicate that entering marriage has the positive effect on the stability of partnership and it grows in time. Also the negative effect of premarital cohabitation persist in time but the most destabilizing element is the cohort of the year when the child was born: women who had their first child born in the cohort of the year of birth after the year 1989 have twice higher probability of the end of the co-resident relationship after the birth of the child.
