Translation of humour in audiovisual genres: comparative study of TV series How I Met Your Mother

Abstract:

This diploma thesis focuses on the analysis of translation strategies used in the dubbing process of the American TV comedy series How I Met Your Mother. It studies the strategies and its influence on the final humoristic effect in the Czech, European Spanish and Latin-American Spanish translations of the selected episodes from this series. The first part is dedicated to problematics of the audiovisual translation, to its particularities and to the translation of humour in audiovisual genres. It also pays attention to different kinds of the humoristic elements that can be present in the translated text and finally examines strategies that can be applied during the translation process. The second part of the thesis is based on the analysis of selected examples classified into fourteen categories. The aim is to compare the use of the strategies in all three versions of dubbing focusing also on their capacity to maintain the humoristic effect of the selected scene.

Abstract:

Předmětem diplomové práce je analýza překladatelských strategií, jež byly použity během tvorby dabingu amerického komediálního seriálu „Jak jsem poznal vaši matku“. Na vybraných epizodách seriálu zkoumá jednotlivé strategie a jejich vliv na konečný humoristický efekt v dabingu do češtiny, do evropské a do latinskoamerické španělštiny. Teoretická část se věnuje problematice audiovizuálního překladu, jeho specifikům a překladu humoru v audiovizuálních žánrech. Dále rozebírá různé druhy humoristických elementů, které se mohou vyskytovat v překládaném textu, a také strategie, které lze při jejich překladu aplikovat. Praktická část se pak zaměřuje na analýzu jednotlivých příkladů, které jsou rozděleny do čtrnácti kategorií. Cílem práce je na základě analýzy porovnat četnost strategií v jednotlivých verzích dabingů a následně pak i jejich vliv na zachování nebo případné vytrácení humoristického efektu v dané scéně.
