Virtual reality motion platforms and users behaviour

Abstract:

V posledních letech zaznamenala virtuální realita výrazný pokrok při interakci s počítačem a vizualizací informací obecně. Bakalářská práce se zabývá rešerší způsobů pohybu ve virtuální realitě od nejjednodušších (myš, klávesnice) až po v současnosti nejpokročilejší, mezi něž řadíme různé náhlavní soupravy s controllery a snímací zařízení. Dále práce zkoumá vliv jednotlivých prostředků interakce s virtuální realitou na chování uživatelů při pohybu (pohybová a virtuální nemoc) a poukazuje na současný stav problematiky pohybu ve virtuální realitě, čímž je především volný pohyb v prostoru. Součástí práce je návrh uživatelské studie, jejímž cílem je zjištění rozdílů mezi prostorovou aktualizací při využití dvou různých typů informací. Jedná se o informace založené na těle (s využitím vizuální stránky) a informace založené pouze na vizuální stránce. Participanti v návrhu empirického testu dokončují trojúhelník, který je lokalizován ve virtuálním prostředí. K porovnání těchto informací slouží tři podmínky pohybu, přesněji tedy chůze, joystick/controller a teleportace. Navržená studie předpokládá největší přesnost při reálné chůzi, jelikož člověk kromě vizuálních informací využívá i skutečné informace založené na těle a naopak nejméně přesný výsledek při teleportaci.

Abstract:

In recent years, virtual reality has seen significant development in the areas of interaction with computer and visualization of information in general. The bachelor thesis examines methods of movement in virtual reality from the simplest ones (mouse, keyboard) to the present day’s most advanced ones, among which we count various headsets with controllers and sensors. The work also investigates the influence of individual means of interaction with virtual reality on behaviour of users during the movement (motion sickness, virtual sickness) and refers to the contemporary state of research on movement in virtual reality, primarily free movement in space. The work includes a user study proposal which aims at finding the differences in spatial updating when two diverse types of information are used: the information based on body (with use of visual aspect) and the information based solely on visual aspect. The participants in the empirical test proposal are completing a triangle located in virtual space. Three conditions of locomotion are used for comparison of the information, namely walk, joystick/controller and teleportation. The proposed study expects the highest precision at real walk, for people use not only visual information but real information based on body as well, contrary to the least precise result from the teleportation.
