Language learning strategies in blind students of English as a foreign language

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zaměřuje na strategie učení se cizímu jazyku u vysoce specifické skupiny – u nevidomých vysokoškolských studentů. Výzkumem strategií učení se cizímu jazyku se věnovala řada výzkumů, žádný z nich se však nevěnoval nevidomým. Počty vysokoškolských nevidomých studentů jsou natolik vysoké, že by měly vzbuzovat zájem vyučujících o to, jak je co nejlépe učit. Používání strategií učení je považováno za podmínku jednoduššího, efektivnějšího a zábavnějšího celoživotního učení. Práce je rozdělena na dvě části, teoretickou a empirickou. V teoretické části jsou představeny tři hlavní koncepty, které tvoří teoretická východiska práce. První kapitola představuje typy zrakových postižení, vzdělávání nevidomých v chronologickém hledisku včetně podmínek a podpory v terciárním vzdělávání v dnešní době. Ve druhé kapitole jsou uvedeny nejvýznamnější teorie osvojování cizího jazyka a současné výukové metody s uvedením specifik vztahujících se k nevidomým studentům. Třetí kapitola se zabývá konceptem strategií učení, uvádí definice, klasifikace a detailně popisuje klasifikaci stěžejní pro tuto práci. Empirická část práce popisuje výzkumnou metodologii, analýzu dat a představuje výsledky studie. Tento výzkum byl realizován jako případová studie, z čehož vyplývá i výběr metod sběru dat. Data byla sbírána pomocí inventáře strategií SILL R. Oxfordové a pomocí individuálních hloubkových rozhovorů, které měly explanační charakter. Soubor výzkumných dat obsahuje vyplněné inventáře SILL a doslovně přepsané rozhovory, které byly kódovány kódy určenými a priori podle klasifikace strategií Oxfordové. Počet účastníků výzkumu byl osm. Výsledky této studie ukázaly, že nevidomí studenti používali všechny skupiny strategií klasifikace Oxfordové s podobnou frekvencí (Ø=3,54–3,08/5). Ve srovnání s intaktní populací používali nevidomí studenti všechny strategie s vyšší frekvencí (srov. Vlčková, 2007). Nevidomí studenti nejvíce používali kognitivní a kompenzační strategie, nejméně používali paměťové a sociální strategie. Rozdíl v používání strategií studenty nevidomými od narození a studenty se získanou slepotou byl identifikován u skupin kognitivních a paměťových strategií. Studenti s vrozenou slepotou používali tyto strategie s vyšší frekvencí. Některé strategie nebyly nevidomými studenty využívány vůbec. Jednalo se o používání vizuálních představ (u studentů s vrozenou slepotou), využívání činnosti (používání vjemů a fyzického ztvárnění; mechanické techniky); rychlé uchopení hlavní myšlenky; poznávání, jak učení jazyku probíhá; vedení si deníku o učení cizímu jazyku, sebeodměňování. Zajímavé je zjištění, že nevidomí studenti používali jednu strategii, která není součástí klasifikace Oxfordové. Tato strategie byla nazvána používání české hlasové syntézy pro anglické texty. Tato strategie byla používána více než polovinou studentů s cílem rozeznat psanou podobu anglických výrazů. Přestože tato studie má určité limitace, např. nízký počet účastníků výzkumu nebo limitace metod sběru dat, výsledky ukazují na další oblasti, které by měly být hlouběji zkoumány. Jedná se o faktory ovlivňující výběr a používání strategií učení se cizímu jazyku, jako je motivace, nadání apod. u nevidomých studentů. Přínosné by bylo zaměřit se na výzkum vlivu používání české hlasové syntézy pro anglické texty na výslovnost nevidomých studentů v anglickém jazyce. Vhodné by bylo zopakovat výzkum s vyšším počtem respondentů a rozšířit výzkumné zaměření na celou populaci zrakově postižených.

Abstract:

The dissertation thesis focuses on language learning strategies in a highly specific group of people of blind university students. Numerous research into language learning strategies has been carried out, none of which was dealing with the blind. The numbers of blind students in mainstream schools are high enough to arouse interest of teachers in best possible ways of teaching them. Using language learning strategies is viewed as a crucial condition for easier, more efficient and more enjoyable autonomous lifelong learning. The work is divided into two parts, theoretical and empirical. In the theoretical part, three main key concepts which form theoretical background of this work are introduced. The first chapter presents types of visual impairments, their classification, education of the blind from the chronological point of view, including tertiary education of the blind nowadays. In the second chapter, the most influential theories of language acquisition are listed to support understanding of teaching methods used nowadays, the description of which is completed with specifics of teaching the blind. The third chapter introduces the concept of language learning strategies, offers definitions and classifications and a detailed description of the core language learning strategy classification for this work. The empirical part of the work describes methodology of the research and data analysis in detail and introduces research results. The work was carried out as a case study, which influenced the choice of data collection methods. The data were gathered by the strategy inventory by R. Oxford (SILL) and by individual in-depth interviews, which functioned as explanatory tools. The data corpus comprises filled-in inventories and transcripts of the interviews, which were coded by codes set a priori according to the Oxford’s classification. The number of participants was eight. The results of this study suggest that blind students use all the strategy groups of Oxford’s classification with similar frequency (Ø=3,54–3,08/5). In comparison with sighted students, blind students used the whole range of strategies with higher frequency scores (the research in sighted students was conducted by Vlčková, 2007). The blind students were using cognitive and compensation strategies the most, whereas the groups of memory and social strategies were used the least. Differences between congenitally blind students and students with vision loss were identified in using memory and cognitive strategies. Congenitally blind students used the strategies more frequently. Some strategies were not used by the blind students at all, namely using imagery, which was not employed by congenitally blind students, employing action (using physical response or sensation, using mechanical techniques), getting the idea quickly, finding out about language learning, writing a language learning diary and rewarding yourself. One surprising finding was that blind students used a strategy that is not a part of Oxford’s classification. The strategy was given a title using Czech voice synthesis for English text reading. This strategy was used by more than a half of the students with the aim to comprehend the written form of English expressions. Despite some limitations of the study, such as low number of participants or limitations of data collection methods, the research results suggest several important areas for further research. One is a research in factors influencing language learning strategy use, such as motivation, aptitude etc. in blind student. Another one is replication of the research with a larger number of blind students. Moreover, a research in language learning strategies in students with whole range of visual impairments is be highly recommended.
