Dying and Death from the Perspective of Employees in Homes for the Elderly

Abstract:

Cíl: Hlavním cílem diplomové práce je autentický popis zkušeností pracovníků domovů pro seniory s umíráním a se smrtí. Metodika: Kvalitativní empirické šetření bylo realizováno prostřednictvím polostrukturovaných rozhovorů s devíti pracovníky dvou domovů pro seniory. Jednotlivé audiozáznamy byly pomocí doslovné transkripce přepsány do textové podoby a následně podrobeny obsahové analýze. Získaná data byla pomocí otevřeného kódování rozdělena do jednotlivých kategorií a podkategorií. Výsledky: Na základě analýzy dat byly stanoveny tři základní kategorie: 1. setkání se smrtí, 2. subjektivní prožívání, 3. péče o umírající a pozůstalé. Mnohé výpovědi ukazují na podobnosti v subjektivním prožívání konkrétní problematiky umírání, objevují se rozdíly dané individualitou osobnosti či odlišnou zkušeností jednotlivých participantů. Ta je přirozeně ovlivněna jejich dalším smýšlením. Z dotazování vyplývá nutnost zachování kontinuity v ošetřovatelské péči o umírajícího. Získaná data hovoří o potřebě koordinace, profesionality a sounáležitosti všech aktérů. Ve chvílích, kdy participanti hovořili o smrti, často užívali termíny jako empatie, zájem o druhého člověka, vnímavost a laskavost. Závěr: Závěrem lze říci, že pracovníci domova pro seniory pokládají smrt za přirozenou součást života. To se ale naučili až v důsledku svého pracovního působení v sociálních službách. Více než samotná smrt klienta je pro ně mnohdy těžší komunikace s rodinnými příslušníky umírajícího. Pracovníci domova pro seniory mají snahu poskytnout klientům v terminální fázi života takovou péči, jaká je v jejich silách a v možnostech zařízení. S ohledem na zajištění všech potřeb umírajícího by bylo žádoucí zlepšit spolupráci se zdravotnickými zařízeními, jestliže stav umírajícího klienta vyžaduje hospitalizaci.

Abstract:

Objective: The main objective of the thesis is the authentic description of the experience of employees in the homes for the elderly with dying and death. Methodology: The qualitative empirical research was conducted by means of semistructured interviews with nine employees of two homes for the elderly. Each audio recording was literally transcribed into the text form and then subjected to content analysis. The data obtained were sorted into categories and subcategories by means of open coding. Results: Three basic categories were set up based on the data analysis: 1. encountering death, 2. subjective experience, 3. care for the dying and the bereaved. Many of the statements show similarities in the subjective experience of the specific issue of dying, there occur differences resulting from the personality and/or different work experience of each participant, which is obviously influenced by their further views. The interviewing implies the necessity of maintaining the continuity in the nursing care for the dying. The data received testify the necessity of coordination, professionalism and sense of belonging of all parties. When speaking about death, the participants often used expressions such as empathy, interest in another person, sensibility and sensibility and kindness. Conclusion: In conclusion, it can be said that employees in the homes for the elderly consider death a natural part of life. However, they have learned this only as a result of their work in social services. Often more difficult for them than the client's death itself is the communication with the family members of the dying. Employees in the homes for the elderly make an effort to give the clients in the terminal phase of their lives the best possible care within their power and the capabilities of the facility. With regard to satisfying all needs of the dying, it would be desirable to improve the co-operation with medical facilities if the dying client's condition requires hospitalization.
