The Cult of the Virgin Mary in Brno's sacred homilies from the first half of the eighteenth century

Abstract:

Diplomová práce pojednává o českých barokních kázáních z 1. poloviny 18. století – konkrétně o kázáních ze sborníků Conchylium Marianum (1736) a Kurtz verfaste Nachricht (1747). Nejprve je v diplomové práci shrnut kulturněhistorický kontext doby baroka v českých zemích, následně jsou vymezeny prvky kázání jakožto jednoho z nejrozšířenějších žánrů barokní literatury – práce podává několik pohledů na definici kázání, dále je popsána struktura kázání či umělecké prostředky v nich použité. Před samotným rozborem kázání práce pojednává o mariánské úctě doby baroka a o brněnských mariánských slavnostech, jež se konaly roku 1736 a při jejichž příležitosti byla pronesena kázání, jež jsou obsažená ve sborníku Conchylium Marianum. Práce následně také pojednává o obléhání Brna švédskými vojsky roku 1645 – při příležitosti stoletého výročí této významné dějinné události byla pronesena kázání, jež jsou obsažena ve sborníku Kurtz verfaste Nachricht. V druhé části práce jsou pak samotná kázání podrobena literárnímu rozboru, jenž se zaměřuje na analýzu různých vyobrazení Panny Marie či mariánského kultu v kázáních.

Abstract:

The thesis discusses the Czech Baroque homilies from the first half of the 18th century – concretely proceedings of sermons Conchylium Marianum (1736) and Kurtz verfaste Nachricht (1747). First of all, the thesis summarizes the cultural-historical context of the Baroque period in the Czech lands, then the elements of homilies as one of the most extensive genre of Baroque literature are defined – the thesis gives a few views on the definition of the preaching literature, furthermore the structure of homilies is described as well as the artistic means used in them. Before the analysis of homilies, the thesis deals with Baroque Marian devotion and with Marian festivities in Brno, which took place in 1736 and during the occasion the homilies were delivered – they are contained in the Conchylium Marianum. The thesis subsequently also discusses Swedish siege of Brno in 1645 – on the occasion of the centenary of this important historical event were delivered homilies, which are included in the Kurtz verfaste Nachricht. The second part of the thesis is focused on the analysis of homilies, the main subject is effigy of Virgin Mary and Marian cult.
