Critical assessment of the ESG reporting and its contribution to sustainable development in Czechia.

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je popsat a kriticky hodnotit současný stav problematiky ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) na území České republiky v širším kontextu udržitelného rozvoje. Velké kótované společnosti budou muset vykazovat zprávy o udržitelnosti již za účetní období 2024, přičemž související legislativa - směrnice Evropské unie (EU) o podávání zpráv podniků o udržitelnosti - byla přijata již v roce 2022 a v řadě členských států stále nebyla transponována do národní legislativy. EU touto regulací a dalšími souvisejícími politikami prosazuje vyšší udržitelnost a vytváří tlak na firmy k odpovědnosti vůči svým dopadům na státní, regionální i lokální úrovni. Diplomová práce obsahuje teoretický rámec, který popisuje problematiku udržitelného rozvoje, vývoj nefinančního reportingu, ESG legislativu a implementaci ESG na úrovni EU a Česka. Vzhledem k aktuálnosti tématu byla za metodu empirického výzkumu zvolena metoda rozhovorů, kdy respondenti byli vybíráni na základě účelového samplingu - jedná se o experty v oblasti udržitelnosti a ESG z různých sektorů. Zjištění ukazují, že i přestože se vnímání udržitelnosti za posledních 10 let výrazně zlepšilo, česká veřejnost a firmy jsou vůči tomuto tématu stále odmítavé a uzavřené. Paradoxem je, že firmy často různé principy ESG již implementují, jen je nevnímají v kontextu udržitelnosti. ESG legislativa je kritizována pro rozsáhlost a nejednotnost, což společnosti nutí se obracet na poradenské firmy, a to pro ně může být finančně velmi náročné.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to describe and critically evaluate the current state of ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) issues in the Czech Republic in a broader context of sustainable development. Large listed companies will be required to report on sustainability as early as the 2024 financial year, while the related legislation - a European Union (EU) directive regarding corporate sustainability reporting - was adopted in 2022 and has still not been transposed into national legislation in a number of Member States. Through this regulation and other related policies, the EU is promoting greater sustainability and putting pressure on companies to be accountable for their impacts at national, regional and local levels. The thesis contains a theoretical framework that describes the sustainability issues, the development of non-financial reporting, ESG legislation and the implementation of ESG at the EU and Czech level. Due to the topicality of the issue, the method of empirical research was chosen as the method of interviews, where respondents were selected on the basis of purposive sampling - they are experts in the field of sustainability and ESG from different sectors. The findings show that although the perception of sustainability has improved significantly over the last 10 years, the Czech public and companies are still reluctant and closed to the topic. Paradoxically, companies often already implement various ESG principles, they just don't see them in the context of sustainability. ESG legislation is criticised for its breadth and inconsistency, which forces companies to turn to consultancy firms, which can be very costly for them.
