TED Talks: Translation and analysis with special regard to subtitling strategies

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá tématem překladu TED Talků z anglického do českého jazyka, primárně v kontextu titulkování, což je jeden z typů audiovizuálního překladu. Cílem této práce je identifikovat a prozkoumat problémy a omezení, se kterými se překladatel TED Talků může při své práci setkat, a představit strategie, které se při tvorbě titulků k řešení daných problémů dají využít. Práce je rozdělena do tří částí. První, teoretická část je zaměřena na úvod do problematiky, kde je představena teorie překladu a lingvistické charakteristiky mluveného jazyka. Tato část se dále věnuje audiovizuálnímu překladu, hlavním specifikům titulkování a popisu strategií, které se při tvorbě titulků používají. Teoretická část je zakončena představením organizace TED a její překladatelské iniciativy. Druhá, praktická část se věnuje překladu transkriptů čtyř vybraných TED Talků. A třetí, analytická část se zabývá analýzou těchto překladů. Bude zde prezentován každý z řečníků, popis metody překladu a analýza strategií, které byly použity s cílem vytvoření optimálního překladu pro použití v titulcích v souladu s doporučeními TED.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the topic of translation of TED Talks from English to Czech, specifically in the context of subtitling, a type of audiovisual translation. The aim of this thesis is to identify and examine the translation issues and constraints that a translator of TED Talks may encounter, and the strategies utilised in subtitling to address these concerns. The thesis is divided into three parts. First, in the theoretical part, the translation theory and the linguistic characteristics of spoken language will be addressed. It will be followed by presenting audiovisual translation as a whole, discussing the main characteristics of subtitling, as well as strategies used in subtitling. This part will be concluded with an introduction of the TED organisation and its translation initiative. Second, the practical part will provide the translation of the transcripts of four selected talks. Finally, the third, analytical part will cover the analysis of the TED Talks. There will be an introduction of each speaker, a description of the translation method and an analysis of the strategies used in order to produce a translation solution suitable for use in subtitles following the TED guidelines.
