The role of body assortative mating of parents in development of their offspring

Abstract:

Similarity in facial and other physical characteristics has been recognized as one aspect of reproductive mate choice in humans, but very few empirical studies have yet addressed the effect of this non-random process on offspring. The main goal of this study was to follow up the relationship between body assortative mating of parents and the characteristics of their offspring. Photographs of parents’ faces from the Brno Growth Study (420 individuals) were processed by geometric morphometrics methods. The similarities of the partners in physical features were analysed in relation to the growth parameters of the offspring (205 mother-father-child triplets). Compared to randomly formed pairs, the real partners were not more similar to each other in any of the observed traits. Differences in the similarity of partners between the parents of boys and girls were found. Strong correlation in age, medium correlation in height, weak correlation in bizygomatic width and very weak correlations in chin height, nose width and number of siblings were found between the partners. Statistically significant relationships were found between the similarity of parents in various features and the growth parameters of their offspring. For example, the more similar in height the parents were, the age at the starting point of the pubertal acceleration of the sons was higher and the age of reaching 98 % of the final height of the daughters was lower. Similarly, the more similar in the minimum frontal width parents were, the growth rate at the point of reaching 98 % of the sons' height was higher and the height at the start of adolescent acceleration of the girls was lower. Overall, it can be stated that the degree of parental similarity in the monitored sample had an effect on some growth parameters of the offspring, often with the opposite trend in sons and daughters. However, future comparative studies of these connections are necessary to interpret the adaptive significance of the observed phenomena.

Podobnost v obličeji a jiných tělesných vlastnostech byla zaznamenána jako jeden z aspektů výběru reprodukčního partnera u člověka, ale jen velmi málo empirických studií se dosud zabývalo vlivem tohoto nenáhodného procesu na potomky. Hlavním cílem této práce bylo sledovat vztah mezi tělesnou asortací rodičů a vlastnostmi jejich potomků. Fotografie obličejů rodičů z Brněnské růstové studie (420 jedinců) byly zpracovány metodami geometrické morfometrie. Podobnost partnerů v tělesných vlastnostech byla analyzována v souvislosti s růstovými parametry potomků (205 trojic matka-otec-dítě). Skuteční partneři si ve srovnání s náhodně vytvořenými páry nebyli navzájem podobnější ani v jednom ze sledovaných znaků. Zjištěné byly odlišnosti v podobnosti partnerů mezi rodiči chlapců a dívek. Mezi partnery silně koreloval věk, středně silně výška postavy, slabě bizygomatická šířka a velmi slabě výška brady, šířka nosu a počet sourozenců. Byly prokázány statisticky významné souvislosti mezi podobností rodičů v různých znacích a růstovými parametry potomků. Čím si byli například rodiče podobnější ve výšce postavy, tím byl věk v bodě startu pubertálního zrychlení synů vyšší a věk dosažení 98 % finální výšky dcer nižší. Obdobně čím si byli rodiče podobnější v nejmenší šířce čela, tím byla rychlost růstu v bodě dosažení 98 % výšky jejich synů vyšší a výška ve věku startu pubertálního zrychlení jejich dcer nižší. Celkově lze konstatovat, že míra podobnosti rodičů měla ve sledovaném vzorku vliv na některé růstové parametry potomků, a to často s opačným trendem u synů a dcer. Budoucí srovnávací studie těchto souvislostí jsou však nezbytné k interpretaci adaptivního významu sledovaných jevů.
