The Poetics of Awkwardness in Taika Waititi's filmography

Abstract:

Práce je věnována tvorbě novozélandského režiséra Taiky Waititiho, zejména jeho nejnovějšímu filmu Králíček Jojo (2019). Je případovou studií zvláště zaměřenou na vizuální styl, žánr a poetiku, které jsou srovnávány s filmovým jazykem režisérova staršího současníka Wese Andersona. Cílem práce je definovat filmovou trapnost – trapný gag, observační trapno, a tzv. camp – a identifikovat tyto její různé podoby v díle Andersona a Waititiho. V práci jsou odhalovány paralely ve vizuálním stylu a poetice obou režisérů a definovány specifika Waititiho poetiky a vizuálního stylu tam, kde se od Andersona odlišuje.

Abstract:

The thesis is dedicated to the work of the New Zealandic director Taika Waititi, mainly his most recent film Jojo Rabbit (2019). The main focus of this case study is the visual style, genre and poetics, which are compared to the film language of the director’s older contemporary, Wes Anderson. The objective is defining awkward humour in film – awkward gag, observational awkwardness, the so-called camp – and identifying these different types in in Anderson and Waititi’s work. In the thesis, parallels in the work of the two directors are observed, allowing for defining the specifics of Waititi’s poetics and visual style where he diverts from Wes Anderson’s.
