Monitoring of spatiotemporal changes of selected mountain glaciers in the Alps using remote sensing

Abstract:

Předmětem bakalářské práce je monitoring vývoje horských ledovců pomocí metod satelitního DPZ na příkladu tří alpských ledovcových oblastí - Pasterze, Marmolada a Triglav. Z vícero optických dat jsou extrahovány ledovcové obrysy a vypočteny změny povrchových ploch v čase. Využita je kombinovaně metoda poměrových spektrálních indexů, nepravé barevné syntézy a následné manuální korekce. Možnost využití radarových dat pro analýzu pohybu horských ledovců je testována metodou offset trackingu na datech Sentinel-1. V práci jsou také představeny některé nové nekonvenční metody monitoringu ledovců, konkrétně toolbox na výpočet ELA metodou AAR a Python model OGGM, který je dále využit pro modelování předpokládaného vývoje sledovaných ledovců na základě GCM modelu s klimatickými scénáři. Vypočtené plochy pomocí optických dat, ale i metody výpočtu ELA a predikce OGGM shodně potvrdily trend ablace ledovců, který se ale u sledovaných ledovců liší. Použité metody na příkladu ledovce Triglav potvrdily nevhodné použití jakýchkoli satelitních dat na ledovce a ledovcová rezidua velmi malých rozměrů. Radarová data neposkytla věrohodné výsledky pro žádné oblasti, což může být dáno jak velikostí ledovce, tak absencí jeho pohybu. Pro horské ledovce s plochou větší než jednotky hektarů, se satelitní data ukázala obecně jako vhodná, nicméně jejich věrohodnost je oproti klasickým terestrickým metodám v některých případech stále diskutabilní.

Abstract:

The subject of the bachelor thesis is to monitor the development of mountain glaciers using satellite remote sensing methods on the example of three Alpine glacier regions - Pasterze, Marmolada and Triglav. Glacier outlines are extracted from multiple optical data and surface area changes over time are calculated. A combined method of band ratios, false color composites and subsequent manual correction is used. The possibility of using radar data for the analysis of mountain glacier movement is tested using the offset tracking method on Sentinel-1 data. Some new unconventional methods for glacier monitoring are also presented, namely a toolbox for calculating ELA by AAR method and a Python-based OGGM model, which is further used to model the projected evolution of the glaciers based on a GCM with climate scenarios. The calculated surface areas using optical data as well as the ELA and OGGM calculation methods consistently confirmed the trend of glacier ablation, but the trend varies for the glaciers under study. The methods used on the example of Triglav glacier confirmed the inappropriateness of applying any satellite data to glaciers and glacial residues of very small size. Radar data did not provide reliable results for any areas, which may be due to both the size of the glacier and the absence of glacier movement. For mountain glaciers with an area of more than a few hectares, satellite data have generally proven to be suitable, but their reliability is still questionable in some cases compared to conventional terrestrial methods.
