Field Dependence in Relation to Perception of and Coping with Stress

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá kognitivním stylem závislost/nezávislost na poli ve vztahu k vnímání a zvládání zátěže. Naším cílem bylo zjistit, zda závislost/nezávislost na poli souvisí s vnímáním závažnosti a řešitelnosti zátěžových situací a zda má vztah k volbě strategií zvládání. Teoretickou část jsme věnovali tématu zátěže, zvládání zátěže a dosavadním poznatkům o kognitivním stylu závislost/nezávislost na poli. Respondenty v našem výzkumu bylo 97 vysokoškolských studentů, u nichž jsme jednotlivé sledované proměnné zjišťovali pomocí individuální metody EFT, dotazníku SVF 78 a námi vytvořeného dotazníku vnímání 16 zátěžových situací. Na základě výsledků se ukázala pozitivní souvislost mezi větší závislostí na poli a celkovým vnímáním závažnosti předložených situací v celém souboru a zvlášť i u skupiny mužů. U mužů bylo dále zjištěno, že se závislostí na poli roste vnímaná závažnost situací týkajících se autonomie a také vnímaná řešitelnost sociálních situací. U skupiny žen jsme nalezli kladnou korelaci mezi závislostí na poli a vnímáním závažnosti situací týkajících se výkonu a úspěchu. Ze strategií zvládání jsme souvislost se závislostí na poli zjistili u dvou strategií. Strategie Kontrola reakcí korelovala s nezávislostí na poli u celého souboru, strategie Náhradní uspokojení se závislostí na poli jen u skupiny mužů. Kromě těchto výsledků, jsme zaznamenali i některé významné rozdíly mezi muži a ženami, jak v míře závislosti na poli, tak ve volbě strategií zvládání a dále ve vnímání některých dílčích situací.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the cognitive style of field dependence/independence in relation to perception of and coping with demanding situations. The aim was to find out if field dependence/independence is related with perception of seriousness and solvability of the demanding stressful situations and if it is connected with the choice of the coping strategies. The theoretical part is devoted to such topics as stress, coping with stress and the contemporary knowledge of the cognitive style field dependence/independence. The respondents in the research were 97 university students, from whom we received the examined variables by means of the individual EFT method and the SVF 78 questionnaire and we also used our own questionnaire about perception of 16 stressful situations. The results show a positive connection between a higher field dependence and the general perception of the seriousness of the presented situations in the entire group of participants and also in the male group separately. As far as men are concerned we also realized that an increasing field dependence means the increase of the percieved seriousness of situations connected with autonomy and also percieved solvability of social situations. In the female group we found a positive correlation between the field dependence and perception of the seriousness of situations connected with achievement and success. We found out that two of the coping strategies were significant in relation with the field dependence. The Reaction Control Strategy correlated with field independence by all participants, whereas the Substitute Satisfaction Strategy correlated with field dependence in the male group only. Besides of these results we also noticed some significant differences between men and women as for the field dependence and the choice of coping strategies and also in perception of some componential situations.
