Innated and learned behaviour in the bats.

Abstract:

Živočíchy sa musia počas života vysporiadať s množstvom ekologických faktorov, ktoré formujú ich rozhodnutia. To, či žijú v skupinách alebo solitérne, či sa spoliehajú na vlastnú skúsenosť alebo sociálnu informáciu, alebo či si počas hibernácie vyberú nižšiu alebo vyššiu teplotu, je určené vnútornými a vonkajšími faktormi, ktoré zahrňujú fyzické a sociálne prostredie jedinca. Sezónnosť je jednou z hnacích síl evolúcie behaviorálnych adaptácií a odpovedí. Kvôli sezónnym zmenám zvieratá prispôsobujú svoje potravné správanie, migrujú, alebo hibernujú, aby sa vysporiadali s nepriaznivými podmienkami. Skupinovo žijúce zvieratá, obzvlášť tie, ktoré sú závislé na sezónne sa meniacich zdrojoch, predstavujú nádejný model pre výskum role príbuznosti, individuálnej skúsenosti a sociálnej informácie vo formovaní správania v určitých podmienkach. V dizertačnej práci som sa zameral na výskum potravného, úkrytového a hibernačného správania aby som prispel k poznaniu o reakciách zvierat počas náročných období ich života. Cieľom práce bolo skúmať úlohu príbuznosti pri potravnom a úkrytovom správaní a objasniť vplyv vnútorných a vonkajších faktorov súvisiacich s hibernáciou na správanie jedincov počas tohto obdobia. Potravné a úkrytové správanie kaloňa egyptského (Rousettus aegyptiacus) bolo sledované pomocou radiotrackingu. Z pohybov kaloňov bola vypracovaná databáza priestorových asociácií. Z kombinácie genetických a priestorových dát boli zostrojené sociálne siete, ktoré slúžili na testovanie predikcií o roli príbuznosti a sezónnosti v zdieľaní potravných stanovíšť a úkrytov. Hibernačné správanie netopiera veľkého (Myotis myotis) bolo sledované pomocou miniatúrnych dataloggerov, ktoré nám poskytli detailné teplotné profily hibernujúcich netopierov. Výsledky dizertačnej práce ukazujú, že príbuznosť nemá vplyv na zdieľanie úkrytov a má iba čiastočný vplyv na zdieľanie potravných stanovíšť. Zdieľanie priestoru záviselo od dostupnosti potravy vyplývajúcej zo sezónnych zmien. Príbuznosť a genetická variabilita taktiež nevysvetlila individuálne rozdiely vo výbere mikroklimatických podmienok a energetického metabolizmu počas hibernácie. Jedince sa líšili v reakcii na vyrušenie počas hibernácie aj v ich správaní počas celej zimy konzistentne s teóriou optimálnej hibernácie. Tieto výsledky nasvedčujú, že prípade potravného a úkrytového správania sa netopiere spoliehajú na kolektívnu informáciu o zdrojoch a ich fluktuácii. V prípade hibernácie, individuálne rozdiely v správaní počas hibernácie, ako aj v reakcii na vyrušenie nasvedčujú, že výber lokálne adaptívnej stratégie je pravdepodobne odlišný pre každého jedinca a vyplýva zo skúsenosti jedincov s faktormi súvisiacimi s hibernáciou. Pre zhrnutie, dizertačná práca ukázala, že kalone egyptské sa spoliehajú na nepríbuzenské asociácie a prispôsobujú potravné a úkrytové správanie k sezónnym zmenám v dostupnosti potravy. Práca ďalej ukázala, že rozdiely v hibernačnom správaní nie sú vysvetlené genetickou variabilitou. Naopak, dôležitejšiu úlohu zohrávajú skúsenosti a optimalizácia správania a energetického metabolizmu.

Abstract:

Animals must deal with a range of ecological constraints that shape their behavioural decisions. Whether animals live in groups or solitarily, if they rely on individual learning or social information, or select a cold or warm microclimate for hibernation, it is determined by intrinsic and extrinsic factors that include the physical and social environment of the animal. Seasonality is recognized as one of the main drivers of the evolution of behavioural adaptations and responses. As a result of seasonal changes, animals adjust their foraging strategies, migrate, or enter hibernation to cope with harsh conditions. Group living animals, especially those that rely on seasonally fluctuating resources, provide a promising model to explore how genetic relatedness, individual experience, and social information contribute to behavioural performance under specific conditions. In this dissertation, I studied the foraging, roosting, and hibernation behaviour of bats to broaden our knowledge about how animals react and respond during challenging times of their lives. The thesis aimed to investigate the role of genetic relatedness and seasonality in foraging and roosting decisions, and to study the effects of intrinsic and extrinsic factors on individual behaviour during hibernation. The foraging and roosting behaviour of Egyptian fruit bats (Rousettus aegyptiacus) was studied using radiotracking. The movements of fruit bats were translated into spatial associations. From a combination of genetic and spatial association data, social networks were constructed to test predictions about the role of relatedness and seasonality in space use. The hibernation behaviour of the greater mouse-eared bats (Myotis myotis) was studied using miniature dataloggers, which provided detailed information about the thermal profiles of hibernating individuals. The results presented in this thesis show that relatedness did not affect roosting association and had only partial effect on foraging associations. Space sharing was rather influenced by food availability stemming from seasonal changes. Genetic relatedness and variability did not explain the interindividual variation in microclimate selection and energetic metabolism during hibernation. Individuals differed in their response to disturbance, as well as their thermal behaviour during hibernation, consistent with the torpor optimization theory. These results suggest that bats rely on communal knowledge about resources and their temporal fluctuation in case of foraging and roosting behaviour. On the other hand, the high interindividual variation in hibernation behaviour and response to disturbance during hibernation suggest that the selection of locally adaptive strategy to survive the winter is likely different for each individual and stem from each bat’s experience with the factors influencing the expression of hibernation. To conclude, this thesis brought evidence that Egyptian fruit bats benefit from non-kin associations and adjust their foraging and roosting behaviour according to seasonal fluctuation in food availability. This thesis also showed that differences in hibernation behaviour are not explained by genetic variability. Instead, individual experience and optimization of behaviour and energy metabolism seem to be more important.
