Transformations and Aspects of the Emergence and Functioning of Non-Gallery Forms of Contemporary Art Mediation in 2020-2021 in Brno

Abstract:

The diploma thesis is devoted to the expanded forms of contemporary art media-tion and specific examples of new projects of off-spaces gallery forms to be established in the years 2020-2021 in Brno. The aim of the thesis is to clarify the reasons for the emergence of new projects, and at the same time, using concrete examples, to examine and describe their ways of functioning in the areas of working with the artwork and the artist-author, their approach to the viewer-public and to the role of the curator. In the first part of the thesis, the format of the non-art gallery is ap-proached through the method of analysis of theoretical texts. At the same time, the usual approaches of classical gallery formats in the areas under study are described. The next part of the thesis briefly introduces the Brno non-gallery/off-space gallery scene and gives some examples of defunct and still functioning projects. In the practical part, answers to the main research questions were sought: what led to the emergence of new non-gallery forms in the years 2020-2021 in the territory of Brno and what are their approaches and ways of functioning in the surveyed areas. The qualitative research was conducted through structured interviews with open-ended questions posed to the authors of specific projects, their content analysis and subsequent synthesis, and with the help of data obtained from theoretical texts. The research also included the off-space project, co-initiated by the author of the thesis. Aspects of this project were examined based on data collected during its activities started in 2021.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca sa venuje rozšíreným formám sprostredkovania súčasného umenia a konkrétnym príkladom nových projektov negalérií so vznikom v rokoch 2020-2021 na území Brna. Cieľom práce je objasniť príčiny vzniku nových projektov, a zároveň na konkrétnych príkladoch preskúmať a popísať ich spôsoby fungovania v oblastiach práce s umeleckým dielom a autorom-umelcom, ich prístup k divákovi-verejnosti a k roli kurátora. V prvej časti práce je metódou analýzy teoretických textov priblížený formát negalérie. Zároveň sú popísané obvyklé prístupy klasických galerijných formátov v sledovaných oblastiach. Ďalšia časť práce stručne predstavu-je brniansku scénu negalérií a uvádza niektoré príklady zaniknutých a stále fungujúcich projektov. V praktickej časti boli hľadané odpovede na hlavné otázky výskumu: Čo viedlo k vzniku nových negalérií/negalerijných foriem v rokoch 2020-2021 na území Brna a aké sú ich prístupy a spôsoby fungovania v sledovaných oblastiach. Kvalitatívny výskum prebiehal prostredníctvom štruktúrovaných rozhovorov s otvorenými otázkami položených autorom konkrétnych projektov, ich obsahovou analýzou a následnou syntézou a za pomoci dát, získaných z teoretických textov. Do výskumu bol zahrnutý taktiež projekt negalérie, ktorého spoluiniciátorkou je autor-ka práce. Aspekty tohto projektu boli preskúmané na základe dát získaných počas jeho činnosti započatej v roku 2021.
